#1 vs #2 overall, past ten years...

While taking a shower, I thought about this. Who's better?

First overall team...
F:
Rick Nash
Ilya Kovalchuk
Patrick Stefan
Vincent Lecavalier
Joe Thornton
Alexandre Daigle

D:
Chris Phillips
Bryan Berard
Ed Jovanovski

G:
Marc-Andre Fleury
Rick Dipietro

Second overall team...
F:
Eric Staal
Jason Spezza
Dany Heatley
Daniel Sedin
David Legwand
Patrick Marleau

D:
Andrei Zyuzin
Wade Redden
Oleg Tverdovsky
Chris Pronger

G:
Kari Lehtonen

Honestly, I'd take the second overall team. There's some real team guys there (Staal, Heatley especially) and both have great goaltenders (Lehtonen/Fleury). Redden and Pronger are very complete. For comparison, a Third overall team would look like this:

Chris Gratton
Radek Bonk
Aki Berg
J.P. Dumont
Olli Jokinen
Brad Stuart
Henrik Sedin
Marian Gaborik
Alexander Svitov
Jay Bouwmeester
Nathan Horton

... saved themselves in the later years...

This has been another pointless thread brought to you by Leetchie.

I'm glad I'm not the only weirdo who was thinking that.

Jovo
Phillips
Fleury

Touche.

This is probably the least weird thing I think about while I shower...

I'm no freak, but I do have interesting and deep thoughts in the shower...

Ditto, that is a MONSTOR team.

Thornton, LecCavalier and Kovalchuk are all huge and dominant scorers, Jovo and Phillips with MA Fleury, no contest!

1st vs 2nd...

Franchise Center: Joe Thornton vs Eric Staal
Offensive Star Center: Vincent Lecavalier vs Jason Spezza
Sniper: Ilya Kovalchuk vs Patrick Marleau (the only spot I can put him)
Power Forward: Rick Nash vs Dany Heatley
Speedy Two way Center: Patrik Stefan vs David Legwand
Bust: Alexander Daigle vs Daniel Sedin
Franchise defenseman: Ed Jovanovski vs Chris Pronger
Offensive defenseman: Bryan Berard vs Oleg Tverdovsky
Complete defenseman: Chris Phillips vs Wade Redden
Franchise goaltender: Marc-Andre Fleury vs Kari Lehtonen

I give it to Thornton, Kovalchuk for the firsts...

I'd take Heatley, Pronger, Sedin and Redden on the seconds...

The rest are ties to me, in terms of future. Spezza = Lecavalier, Stefan = Legwand, Berard = Tverdovsky, and Fleury = Lehtonen.

Thoughts?

The 2nds win with a 4-2-4 record...

No contest??

MA Fleury is in the same level as Kari Lehtonen, to me. Perhaps SLIGHTLY ahead only because he has NHL experience, but not much.

Jovocop is compared to Pronger -- Jovo is great, but Pronger?? He won a Norris, though his health is in question. Chris Phillips over Wade Redden? Ask any Senator fan who's better...

As far as Lecavalier and Thornton, I think Staal and Spezza will be close, give them time. Thornton and Lecavalier were 97 and 98 picks, while Spezza and Staal were 01 and 03 picks. We'll see.

I agree with this except for 2 things:
1. Heatley is not really a power forward. He's more of a skilled forward with size. There hasn't been a true power forward drafted #1 or #2 (outside of Nash) in a long time because so many great power forwards in Juniors wind up 3rd liners in the NHL.

2. No way does Legwand=Stefan. Legwand already has 2 40 pt seasons and was on pace for over 60 pts when he got injured last year. And he seems to be picking up right where he left off. Stefan hasn't even had a season where he was on pace for 40 pts. Legwand is a budding #1 center. Stefan looks like a decent #3.

I agree. Heatley isn't quite a power forward, but he's as close to one on the team of #2's. I'd take him over Nash, and that's no shot to Nash.

If that's the case... then it's 5-2-3 for the #2's. I think Stefan will end up as a decent #2 center, and Legwand will probably be a first line center.
