Random hockey brawl

this is a hockey brawl between Team Russia and team Canada. Its from 1988 and it looks like it is juniors players being most of them are wearing full face cages.... fantastic brawl though. the best part is that the refs actually have the lights turned off to try and control the players and nothing stops them... pandimonium

All I know is that I heard the name Fleury a lot. Does anyone know who else was on those teams?

This was 1988. Theo Fleury was involved and was at the start of it when he was jumped by a Russian.

It was from the world junior Championships and both teams where disqualified costing Canada a chance of the gold in the final.

It's a pretty famous brawl.

I'm almost positive Shane Corson was in the middle of things.

I can tell you for sure that both teams were disqualified from the tournament. Harold Ballard was the owner of the Maple Leafs then and he bought gold medals for the entire Canadian team. I can remember this and I also believe they received the medals during the intermission of a Maple Leaf game during Hockey Night in Canada. During this tournament Canada was pretty much a shoe in to win gold so that is why Harold did it.

There were some interesting names in that tournament.

The Finns (who beat the Czechs for the gold) were led by the immortal Jukka Pekka Seppo, who was drafted by the Flyers (2nd round in 86) but never came over.

On the Czech squad was former Flyer Jiri Latal, who made the All-tournament team.

Do a google search for "Punch-up in Piestany" to get information about this game.

Basically under the old format, there was no sudden-death elimination tournament, only a round-robin. The Soviets were out of the medals, and Canada was assured one, with the color determined by the score. The Soviets played a very dirty game, Canada (starting with Theo Fleury) lost it, and both were disqualified.

thanks for the video link

Here's the part that they don't show:

Czech Army Troops pointing guns at the hockey players to calm everything right down. CBC Television calling it a 'black mark' on Canadian Hockey, and dressing down everyone who was on that Canadian club pretty well, until Don Cherry and some very vocal others fought tooth and nail in the media saying these kids were just sticking up for their teammates.

It was a pretty amazing situation, and I remember it very clearly watching it all unfold as a kid.
