Most of the Jets were back on the ice at the MTS Centre following a harrowing win over the Wild on Sunday as they get ready for a date with the Flyers on Tuesday night. According to Brian Munz of TSN 1290 Winnipeg the only guys missing are Blake Wheeler, Chris Thorburn and Mark Stuart while emergency recall Nelson Nogier was on the ice for practice. Jason Bell of the Winnipeg Free Press indicated that Jacob Trouba was skating in a yellow non-contact uniform.
Nelson Nogier: On getting the call up. Who did he call? What was his parents reaction like? How does he assess his year so far? What does he need to work on to improve his game? On the change from Junior to the AHL game. What were the nerves like today? Did playing in the Memorial Cup help him prepare? Playing a more significant role with the Moose with all the recalls? Handling the next 24 hours. What are the biggest strengths to his game?
Brian Strait: What was it like to get back into the NHL? Sense of relief after getting the phone call to come up? What did he think of his game overall? What is it like to see Nelson Nogier get the recall? How did he feel about his pairing with Josh Morrissey went?
Coach Maurice: Injury updates? What does he know about Nogier? What has he liked about Mathieu Perreault’s game the last two or three weeks? On Perreault being a -10. Will he share his goaltending plan for this week?
Hellebuyck & Hutchinson
Blake Wheeler: How welcome were Monday & Tuesday for him? Seeing Armia & Matthias healthy again. Being able to survive the grind. Is it easier to play their game based on the upcoming schedule?
Shawn Matthias: How does he feel? Has his timeline of return changed at all? What has been the hardest part of this for him? Is he hopeful to return for a game at home or is he thinking Vancouver? What can he and Armia bring to the lineup?
Joel Armia: How did it feel to be back on the ice? Update on his road to recovery. Any idea when he will have an opportunity to play? Does he have a game circled on the calendar when he think he will return? How much did it help to have Shawn Matthias with him? Frustrating getting injured when he was playing well?
Coach Maurice: Update on Armia and Matthias. Does he think they could play in the home games? What did it mean to get a couple of days off and then back onto the ice for a practice today? Would he re-think doing game day skates based on the 32 games in 60 days type schedule? Update on Tyler Myers. Any advantage in the schedule moving forward? How would he describe his team's confidence during this stretch? How does he feel about Olympic participation? With Ovechkin saying he would go regardless, has he considered that other players might do the same? On Laine's response today to the own goal.
Blake Wheeler: Having more depth in the lineup. Does it make it easier mentally? On Laine having one of the greatest 18 year old seasons ever.
Nikolaj Ehlers: On his relationship with Patrik Laine. On what they do on the road. On Laine adapting to the lifestyle off the ice. Has it been able to help him? Is this a close team? Forming bonds.
Mark Scheifele: Is there anything that Laine can teach other players? Outside of hockey, is he learning about Finland? How much better is the mood after a couple of wins? Is it easier to shrug off losses when you’re younger or is it harder? On potentially getting a bunch of players back into the lineup. On getting to play in Vancouver twice. Any drawbacks? Has Patrik Laine had the best hockey season an 18 year old has ever had? Anyone he would compare Laine to? Getting enough secondary scoring?
Coach Maurice: Has he asked Chris Thorburn to be a bit more "vigilant" with all the youth in the lineup? On Laine having one of the best years an 18 year old ever has? Is he getting enough secondary scoring? Status of Armia, Petan and Matthias? Where does Alex Burmistrov fit in when everyone is healthy? Has he spoken to Burmistrov? How is his team handling the mood swings? On young players dealing with losses vs. older players. What can other players learn from Laine?
The Jets took to the ice in Vancouver as they get ready for the final game before the Christmas break. Following the skate players spoke.
Blake Wheeler: Assessing the day. Reflecting on last night, did they fail to build on a solid first period? Will they be a little more physical tomorrow? Feel a bit odd to be hanging around Vancouver, waiting for game two? Does it add anything to playing game two? Might this “anomaly to the schedule” be worth exploring. On facing Markstrom. Bonus to be on the road so they don’t have the distraction of Christmas?
Patrik Laine: On the adjustments they need to make for tomorrow. Did he feel he got enough good looks at Markstrom? Feel a bit odd to be hanging around Vancouver, waiting for game two? In-game adaptations for his line.
Mark Scheifele: On the consistency issues with this club. In-game adaptations. On what Patrik Laine has been able to accomplish to date. Advantage to be in the same city and have another game tomorrow.
Coach Maurice: Thoughts on Nic Petan’s return last night. How close are Matthias/Armia to returning? Any chance for either of them tomorrow? Any insight as to why consistency from period to period is a problem for this team? Complicated problem with no quick fix? In-game adaptations for the players. How would he assess Dustin Byfuglien’s game this season? Will it be a more intense game tomorrow night?
Hellebuyck starts again. Same lines and D pairs expected vs. Sabres as they used against the Panthers.
Blake Wheeler: How he feels about the team at the mid way point. Common denominator in the two games in Florida? Playing with speed. Getting to the team identity. What did he like about today’s practice? What has impressed him about the play of the young guys? Challenge to the team to raise their play in the second half.

Coach Maurice: Did he like what he saw out on the ice? Finding their identity. On the Jets finding another level. Will Hellebuyck start tomorrow? Laine’s spot on the power play. On the age makeup of the power play units. On Byfuglien and Laine dynamic on PP. How impressed is he by Josh Morrissey’s first half? Rare to have a rookie play that 1st pairing role. On Chiarot. On the Jets not winning three games in a row.
Off ice workouts today. Players slowly filtering out for interviews.
Player Audio: Scheifele, Perreault, Petan, Morrissey, Hellebuyck.
Coach Maurice topcs: Thought on Laine being named to the All-Star game. What can this do for Laine? Is Laine even better than what they expected? With the spotlight on Laine has it helped take the shine off Scheifele? Ehlers or Scheifele could have been worthwhile All-Star representatives? What does it do for Hellebuyck to face Price? On Hellebuyck managing confidence and learning to be a number one goalie. Is the toughest thing for Hellebuyck to overcome a bad game? Is he impressed with how the Habs have dealt with their injuries? On Radulov's evolution as a player. On removing open ice hits from the NHL.
It had previously been left as "to be determined" by the coaching staff as to what the plan of action for today would be but after last night's stinker against the Habs it should come as little surprise that the players skated prior to departing for Arizona. All are present and accounted for with the exception of Ben Chiarot according to Brian Munz of TSN 1290 Winnipeg.
Dustin Byfuglien: On the type of reaction they expect from the team tomorrow. What troubled him most about yesterday's game? On the team having to be willing to pay the price to play an NHL game. On the importance of the next game. How did he feel about his play? Anything he'd like to have back? Was that the worst performance of the year? Hard to play a game like that behind you? Is the team too comfortable?
Bryan Little: An uptempo practice this morning. After a performance like last night, do you come into today with some uncertainty? On the team having to be willing to pay the price to play an NHL game. Why does he think it is and what questions does it raise in his mind? Have things gotten comfortable? On what to expect from the Coyotes.
Shawn Matthias: Was this the type of practice he expected? After a performance like last night, do you come into today with some uncertainty? Has he wiped yesterday from his mind? On the errors they made.
Coach Maurice: How did he manage the displeasure he felt yesterday and how did he feel today? Update on Chiarot. Was there a time in his coaching career when he would have come back with a punishment type skate tomorrow? On the team's willingness to pay the price. How does that happen and what do you do? Bouncing back from poor performances. Approaching the Coyotes after they've had a long rest. On Patrik Laine. What will give him an indication of his team's response early on in tomorrow's game? A fine line between leaving a game like last night's and moving forward?
With the news that the Jets had recalled Ondrej Pavelec back to the big club breaking this morning (not to mention breaking twitter) it should come with little surprise that all eyes were on the MTS Centre for the 12 noon Jets practice. Via Brian Munz of TSN 1290 Winnipeg we learned that “Pavelec & Hellebuyck on ice. Hutchinson was out early working with goalie coach but has now left”.
Ondrej Pavelec: On getting the call. His thoughts on what has been happening with the Jets goalies this season. Will he start tomorrow? Has he been given any indication as to what expectations are. How much is he looking forward to playing with the Jets? How did it feel walking into this room? On his game this year with the Moose. Did he think an NHL opportunity wasn’t going to come? How surprised was he when the call came? How important is this stretch for him? Comparing this to time he carried Jets to playoffs. His relationship with Hellebuyck and Hutchinson and whether he chatted with them when he came in. Is this a perfect opportunity for him? How different did today’s practice feel and how did he feel? Does he look at this opportunity to showcase himself to other NHL teams? Differences in the job for NHL and AHL. Adjusting to the NHL game. Can he reproduce the “very best Ondrej Pavelec”? Has he been told “he’s gonna be given the ball”? Was he angry when he got sent down?
Connor Hellebuyck: His mindset with Pavelec joining the goalie corps. Was he surprised to hear that Pavelec was called up? Does he take it as a message to himself and Hutchinson? Is he aware that the goalies haven’t been playing poorly, and that’s why management made this decision? What has he learned? The difference on being a starter and the expectations that come with that responsibility. On the need for the team to play better in front of the goalies. On developing the “mental toughness” needed to be in the NHL. Lessons to be learned from this situation. What did he like about his last few games? What can he learn from Pavelec? Has his confidence wavered at all?
Michael Hutchinson: On what it means with Pavelec joining the team. Does it get tougher for him with the struggles they are facing. How surprised was he when they called up Pavelec?
Coach Maurice: On the last few days leading into this decision to bring Pavelec up. Pavelec starts tomorrow? How long does he anticipate keeping Pavelec around for? Any update on Patrik Laine? Still hasn't skated? How does this fit with the decision to start the season with two young goalies? On Hellebuyck's belief in his abilities. What does it do to his team when the puck is going into the net at an irregular pace? On the team's preparation. Is there any consideration to putting Byfuglien back with Enstrom? Status of Tyler Myers? Did the organization overestimate what Hutchinson/Hellebuyck could provide them in terms of wins. Long term goalie situation. On timing of Pavelec call up
Thorburn the extra forward.
Hellebuyck & Hutchinson
Bryan Little: On the team hitting a wall/team confidence. Does he get a sense from Laine/Ehlers that they are lacking in confidence? On the passing not being as crisp. On a contract extension. Is the team lacking an edge? When the goal scoring well goes dry. Does he feel more pressure when he plays with young players to lead them? Does he have to push them on the defensive end? Is regaining confidence harder for young guys?
Blake Wheeler: On the focus of the Jets. What would it mean to keep Bryan Little long term? Pushing towards ‘better days’. Where has the organization taken strides towards this? Key to breaking out of the slide? On the youth. Where do they miss Toby most when he is not in the lineup? When this group is being successful how would he describe the identity of this team?
Andrew Copp: What is the team mindset right now? Thoughts on his new linemates. Assessing the last block of games.
Coach Maurice: Injury updates. Does he push last week away? On Ehlers/Laine. Is Bryan Little the kid of player he can slot in to help players who aren't playing as well. What was the most concerning part about the loss on Saturday night? On adjusting the lines. On his leaders (Little, Wheeler) wanting to be part of the long term solution for this organization.
On Ondrej Pavelec: “Pav skated by himself this morning, so he’s back on the ice.”
On Tobias Enstrom: “Toby’s got a little swell in there so we’ve got to wait kind of for a few days before we get a better idea where we are at with it.” The follow up suggested Enstrom wouldn’t be a player tomorrow against Dallas and Maurice answered “correct”.
Blake Wheeler: On trade deadline day and whether he’d like to see new players brought in. What is the mood like right now in the room? How hard is it to get up off the mat after that loss? On why team defence seems to be the Jets Achilles heel. On the frustration not being able to keep puck out of the net. Is the problem mental?
Patrik Laine: On winning NHL rookie of the month. Does he feel like it didn’t take long to get back into the swing of things post injury? Has he thought about scoring 40? Does he think about the Calder race at all? Why is it so hard to play team defence? Does it feel like the Jets are making any progress?
Mathieu Perreault: On the work in practice. His thoughts with respect to the trade deadline. On the Jets team defence. What is it like waiting for the 2 pm deadline?
Connor Hellebuyck: On the progression of his game. On his expectations. Does he think he needs more seasoning to raise his level? A game like last night doesn’t deter him? What is the biggest challenge to handling the number one role at the NHL level? How much of a challenge is it to erase the outside noise? What is in his mind when he gets pulled? Are there goalies he likes to watch? More on merging his style with what he sees from around the league.
Coach Maurice: Any trade updates? What does he do to make it easier on his players today? Specifically Perreault/Stafford? What is the biggest challenge for a young goalie to establish himself as a number one? How does he think Hellebuyck handle these challenges? What is the biggest asset of Hellebuyck's game? Was yesterday a matter of rust or underlying problems? Copp and Dano still options for Friday? On goalies needing to be older to be more established and how does it apply to Hellebuyck? Have they re-thought their decision from training camp, was Hellebuyck rushed? Update on Myers. What is his mindset on how many players he'd like to keep around with guys getting healthy? On Patrik Laine being named NHL rookie of the month. On his motivation to win the Calder or score 40.
