Whats a fair contract for captain Koivu?

The talks have started with Koivu and Gainey for a new contract.

What would the fans be comfortable with money and lenth wise?

i say no more than 3 mill a year for 3 years. If hes asking for more, trade him

9 million over 3 years, MAX. That might be pushing it IMO.

I think it is time to part ways with Saks.

I can see him in Minny with his bro, or on a contender as a second line center.

But his days in Mtl should be numbered, and if we are not in the playoff hunt by the deadline I think we should look at unloading him (maybe even sooner if the right deal is presented).

Cheers
Mike

$10M for 3 years is probably "Fair".

But if we're smart, we should offer him $30M over 10 years.

This must be the 100th thread on this...

Sad that most of want Koivu out and have no clue what it's gonna take to replace what he brings to this team. Most of don't even seem to realize what he brings to this team, maybe that would be a start before you go spouting off opinions about him.

He's not gonna take a paycut to stay here so you can forget about that one. He's accepted his qualifying offer like 3 times as a Hab. $4M/season for 3 years plus team option is completely fair considering he's a UFA.

Only if it appeared he wouldn't sign here would I trade him.

$4M for someone who might not even have 2 years left in him... He plays 65 ish games a year, he doesn't deserve anything over $3m.

Koivu-Zednik-Huet for Roloson-Pouilliot

Than package Theo - Kovalev for Luongo-Bo

Than trade Roloson to the leafs for Sundin
than trade Ribeiro and Dandeneault for Eminger
Than call back Perezhogin and Kosty and buy out Sundstrom

You see , it's so simple

Fair - $2.5 for 3 yrs
Acceptable - $3 for 3 yrs
Overpaid - anything over $3.2
Ludicrous - what he is making now ($3.42) or more

However, if we can trade him then why not.

How's that smart?

No one can predict how good Saku will be once he is 39 or 40...

2.3 millions per season for 2 years . Enough of those bis salary for players that are not stars . Koivu is good but misses too much games to wins more than that .We have to get another first center , so Koivu is more deserving a second liner salary. Also at that price , we would be able to trade him for a decent return.I hate when were are stick with a player because he wins too much money .

I totally agree with you. That would be just perfect

The only problem is that i doubt that Saku would accept 2.3 per year.I think he's going to want at least 3m.Personally i don't want the Habs to give him more than 2.5 nor to give him a long term contract.

2-2-2 ftw

I think there are alot of other teams that would be willing to give this guy around the 4 million a year area, even if hes only going to play 65 games, and the playoffs there is no way hes going to sign in montreal for less then what he gets paid now.

Hes worth the money there is no one in the habs lineup today that is even close to being as good of a center as he is.

Also if you think we can spend the money on something better youre a tool , nobody wants to sing with us .

Last time we let someone go ( Brisebois ) we were all happy because we could sing someone better .. but the only one wanting to be with us was in fact a worse player ( Dandy )

if we consider that we're paying Bonk 2.5 I would go with 3 millions... anything more is overpaid...

sign him for 2 years, if he doesn't want, bye bye...

Saku is still a very good player that could be useful, but he must not be our best player anymore, if he is, we're in trouble

Having a top line centre for 65 games a year plus playoffs is much better than not having one at all. I know you guys think they grow on trees but...

I like Saku, but we should let him go. Trade him now, when he'll have more value. Then give the "C" to Begin.

he is a good player(not great), been with the club since drafted, a terrific guy in the community and likely 50-70 point guy

2.5 a year for 4 yrs is generous although i think he can get that anywhere and may sign in minnesota
