IMO Juoveli won't be on the Canucks yet, but can you specify who the new young kids you've added to the team are?

Yeah it's been horrendous so far but this seems a bit premature.

We're still in this tournament. No reason to not root for the team until we're out (let that be the round robin or finals or anything in between). There's a reasonable time for this sort of ultimate doom and gloom - and it's not quite yet.

Our defense could be elite next year.

Juolevi- Heiskanen
Valimaki- Salo
Vaakanainen- Niemelainen.

Our defense this year has been the only positive, behind that garbage goaltending, coach and offense our defense has managed to do well against every 4 teams they played against. Now add another year of development for those kids with a great coach and who knows.

Then Kuokkanen, Vesalainen, Tolvanen and Rasanen should be expected to do something in WJC '18.

As a Sens fan I'm curious about Nurmi. Has anyone seen him play? His stats don't look impressive.

2018 Finland Roster Talk

Now that this nightmare after Christmas is over for Team Finland for this year, it's time to look forward and start the long (and ultimately meaningless) discussion of what will the team look come December 2017.

Here are some of my thoughts.

First, I will list returning players, who should be on the team barring injuries or NHL. I will not even consider Puljujärvi or Laine.

Centers:
Räsänen

Wingers:
Tolvanen
Vesalainen
Kuokkanen
Koivula

Defense:
Juolevi
Välimäki
Heiskanen
Vaakanainen

Now comes the more interesting part, that is to say, the more speculative part. Here I will list players who I think will be on the team, in order of how likelihood of the making the team in my opinion.

Centers:
Koskenkorva (C/W)
Ikonen (C/W)
Heponiemi (C/W)
Koppanen

Wingers:
Tuulola
Jääskä
Moilanen
Nyman

Defense:
Salo
Jokiharju
Niemeläinen
Räsänen
Almari
Reunanen

Goalies:
Luukkonen

I listed 13 forwards and 9 D and 1 goalie (because I don't know much about goalies). It should be a pretty good team, but nothing spectacular except for the D, which looks really good on paper.

Hopefully there will be more swag and intellect in next year's team. Talking about the "golden era" and comparing to Sweden I must add there is still much work to do and miles to cover.

Finland's junior program must implement further changes in its strategic and guiding principles and objectives. Along the lines I have outlined previously.

Why is a Swedish prospect and a collective of such players much more skilled and cerebeal than the Finnish counterpart still? Cuz the Finnish system and related underlying hockey and coaching culture suck still in the big picture

As I said we need an 'academic culture revolution' in Finnish hockey. And more intelligent players and even still more skilled players in average to come out of the youth ranks going forward.

Players who have played for the U20 national team this year:

Goalies:

None

Defense(9):

Juolevi(NHL?)
Välimäki
Heiskanen
Jokiharju
Kotkansalo
Niemeläinen
Salo
Almari
Vaakanainen

Forwards(11):

Somppi
Mäkinen
Vesalainen
Tolvanen
Räsänen
Kuokkanen
Koivula
Koppanen
Jääskä
Oksanen
Turkulainen

I think Ahokas will keep the core group from the U18 gold winning team there so.

Something like:

Vesalainen-Ikonen-Tolvanen
Koivula-Räsänen(A)-Turkulainen
Kuokkanen-Mäkinen-Oksanen
Tuulola-Koppanen-Nurmi
Somppi/Moilanen

Välimäki(C) - Jokiharju
Heiskanen - Vaakanainen
Niemeläinen - Salo(A)
Kotkansalo

Luukkonen
Laakso

Luukkonen

I actually forgot Turkulainen, I should have listed him as a possibility.

Nurmi, Oksanen, Mäkinen, Somppi and Kotkansalo are definite possibilities, but I very much prefer the guys I listed over them. Obviously these players can develop a hell of a lot in a year, making these listings futile in the end, but hey, gotta pass the time somehow.

My team as of now:

Vesalainen - Räsänen - Tolvanen
Kuokkanen - Heponiemi - Koivula
Ikonen - Koskenkorva - Turkulainen
Jääskä - Koppanen - Tuulola
Moilanen

Heiskanen - Juolevi
Välimäki - Jokiharju
Salo - Vaakanainen
Niemeläinen/Räsänen

Luukkonen
Laakso

I think the centers are a bit of a question mark though. Would be great if someone really stepped up their game in the coming year, and someone probably will. Once again I'm faced with the futility of this discussion at this point, but can't help myself.

It is meaningless how many mindless geezers will be buzzing in Young Lions next Boxing Day if there ain't no real leading celebral players of vision among them.

Guys wake da **** up. Kuokkanen and Raesaenen can hopefully elevate their game next year.

Jets won't release Laine and Oilers won't release Puljujärvi to 2018 U20 WJC's.

Are you sure Oilers will release Puljujärvi to 2017 IIHF men's worlds.?
By the way this thread is made for Team Finland's 2018 U20 WJC roster talk.

Not Team Finland 2017 IIHF men's worlds roster talk.
PS yeah i know Finland and Canada are same group again in men's worlds this year.

Mäkinen C -98
Kuokkanen C/LW -98

Tolvanen LW -99
Vesalainen RW -99
Moilanen RW -99

Nurmi RW -98
Oksanen RW -98

After the U18s and this season I'd go with something like this:

Vesalainen-Ikonen-Tolvanen
Koivula-Räsänen-Turkulainen
Kuokkanen-Koppanen-Ylönen
Kuiri-Jääskä-Moilanen
Luostarinen

Juolevi/Salo - Jokiharju
Heiskanen - Vaakanainen
Välimäki - Niemeläinen
Kotkansalo

Luukkonen
Laakso

Tons of potential options for bottom 6 roles with Oksanen, Tuulola, Innala, Heponiemi, Nyman, Nurmi, Virtanen, Stråka, Sihvonen, Mäkinen and Somppi to name a few.
