So.... apparently dropping gold is a prerequisite for a team to move to LA?

Aren't the Rams already having enough problems filling their stadium?

One problem is that the Coliseum seats 90,000+. 65,000 is going to look more sparse with 25,000 empty seats.

We really should go easy on those small markets

Not to mention that the Raiders stayed closer to LA. So naturally, the Raiders' fan base stayed more intact in LA.
I grew up in LA, and was there pre-Raiders, and post-Rams&Raiders, and I think you're right on the mark that the Raiders staying closer to LA made a huge difference. Every LA Raider fan I knew still traveled up to Oakland for at least a game a year if not more, plus there was always the game against the Chargers. It was easy.

Whereas I don't know of any Rams fans who traveled to StL for games ... like EVER. Moving halfway across the country is a lot different, and it definitely eroded the fan base more than the Raiders' move did. As soon as they left, a lot of fans were just done with the team altogether.

Quote:
But with the way you were stating that the Rams were somehow the same as the Chargers was just wrong. I do believe the Raiders' fan base here will eventually die down especially if the Rams start winning and the Raiders move to Vegas. I mean if you're a kid who is growing up in LA, why would you root for a team from hubdreds of miles away whwn you already have a team here? I know with the Raiders it's different with the LA fans but geography still matters.
The Raiders SoCal fan base will still be strong if they move to Vegas, as that's an easy trip for most of those in SoCal. Hell, it's closer than they've been for the last 20 years (and a nicer place to go than the dumpy Coliseum). A very successful Rams team might push the Raiders down to #2, but they ain't going away. And they're never rooting for the Chargers.

And let's be honest, while the Raiders aren't necessarily packing stadiums any one particular place, they are along with the Cowboys the most national brand in the NFL. There's a good number of Raider fans EVERYWHERE, whereas the Rams and Chargers really have to rely on the local market.

I'm just reminded of what Steve Young said about playing in the Coliseum during his USFL run. It's just cavernous. There's a reason why most of the newer stadiums are high 60,000s/low 70,000s in capacity. Tough to expect anybody to pay NFL prices for a mediocre product and fill up a 90,000+ seat stadium, especially a market that the NFL abandoned for 20 seasons.

Plus with the Chargers playing in a 30K seat stadium they'll have the opposite effect. A unique setting for 2 years and likely be never seen again.

If they sell the experience as opposed to the team, it will be a tough ticket to get. A reseller's market

StubHub wins on many levels here.

it won't take long for spanos to realize what a huge mistake he made. same goes for the NFL. they had the chance to relocate the raiders and instead they move the chargers. hilarious

the chargers might actually have less fans than the clippers do in LA, and that's really saying something. already a nightmare scenario for them, having to play in a soccer stadium for two seasons (poor LA galaxy) before basically becoming tenants in the inglewood stadium

i've never seen anything like this. i just hope they rebrand and leave everything that belongs in SD behind

There'll be enough visiting fans to help fill it up. Unfortunately we saw with the Chargers that it was an easy ticket to buy and plenty of visiting fans didn't mind escaping winter and taking a weekend trip to SD. I did enjoy the stadium for the one Galaxy game I attended years ago.

Because there is a new Stadium coming, before last year that wasn't a thing.

NFL gave them a window to announce a move. Chargers gathered enough signatures to get a vote on the San Diego (city, but not county) November ballot about raising funds for a stadium. The proposition was voted down.

Chargers original intention was to build a stadium for joint use in Carson with the Raiders. But the Rams proposal for the Inglewood stadium won over the owners in charge of overseeing possible relocation. NFL then gave the Chargers the chance to move to Inglewood if they couldn't hammer out a deal with San Diego.

I little surprised with the complete dismissing of the Chargers in the LA market. If the Rams had been in LA the past 20 seasons instead of St Louis I can see it more. And arguably it's been 35 years since they were in LA, spending the 15 years in Anaheim.

I would expect there's a large younger generation open to adopting whichever team has the better on-field success?

LA doesn't want the chargers because LA football fans already have their teams

teams like the raiders and cowboys are enormously popular in SoCal, as are the niners, chiefs, and broncos. and whatever uncommitted younger fan who grew up during the era of no LA football most likely became a rams fan last year. not to mention there's USC and UCLA football

the chargers fanbase in LA is virtually nonexistent compared to those teams i mentioned which makes this move so ridiculous. the rams had a long LA history so moving them back was justified, the chargers are a san diego team. they have zero connection with LA

I personally do not know a single person who dropped their current team affiliation to be a Rams fan. That will certainly be the case for the Chargers as well. I think this is an AFC city, so there's a lot of room for the Rams to gain fans. Chargers, I don't think so. I am not dropping my team for a different AFC team nor can the Chargers be a "second team" for me.

Everybody already cheers for the Raiders, nobody is going to cheer for another AFC west team.

Only way this can work is if they change the team name and such and just try to be someone else.

Wonder if they'll trade for 1OA like we did when we came back.
