For Souray?

Eric Belanger, Joe Corvo and a late pick for Sheldon Souray and Jan Bulis.

I still think Kings fans would be disappointed after getting Souray.

If you're going to offer that package to Montreal and they're going to be dumping salary, I'd prefer Zednik (and yes, I know D is the first issue.)

Edit: looking at the list, I'd take Dandenault too over Souray.

Isn't Belanger an UFA at season's end? I doubt Montreal would have any interest in this.

Andrew Ference, Jason Weimer, 2006 1st round pick, and a 2006 4th round pick for Saku Koivu and Sheldon Souray.

Montreal gets a salary dump, a top-four defenseman, a gritty role player and a couple of good picks. Calgary gets their #1 center rental who can feed Iginla the puck, and a top-four (Albertan) defenseman who can score goals and use his body.

I'd say...

To Montreal: Jordan Leopold, Chris Simon, Jason "The Worm" Weimer

To Calgary: Souray, Koivu

How does Calgary add $5 550 000 in contracts and only ship out two small contracts with the cap in place?

I would argue that Koivu's trade value at deadline will exceed Weight's. Koivu is nearly as effective a playmaker as Weight, a better goal scorer, and a far superior defensive player. Koivu may be small and injury prone, but he is also a tough little gnat.

Montreal should easily be able to get a package including AT LEAST a first rounder and good prospect.

At the deadline, those salaries are already paid and Koivu is an impending UFA.

What if you changed that 1st to a 2nd, and changed Jason Weimer for Matthew Lombardi.

I'll betcha that in any Koivu to Montreal deals in the works, that's the name that Bob Gainey is gonna get stuck on.

No, next season. And even if he was, hometown boy would love to sign with the Habs....

They're partially paid but there is still a percentage left after the deadline that needs to be paid. Can the Flames afford to ice a lineup that hits the cap level? If so, things must have changed significantly from last season when they didn't turn a profit until something like the third round of the playoffs.

I don't think any one have come close yet to offer what would MTL ask in return for Koivu. The only way I see MTL trade him is if we are out of the playoff race and decide to rebuilt. If that happens, we would want good prospect in return. A 1st round pick is also nice but it would probably be a late one and the draft is rather weak, so I want prospect instead.

The amount to be paid after the deadline is relatively small. I think the Flames could easily afford Koivu, for example.

At the trade deadline, as long as a team hasn't been flirting with the cap all season long, there's often a good bit of wiggle room. The salary cap is per year, but if you've only spent $36 mil (or are on pace to spend $36 mil), you have the capacity to add up to $3 mil in salary at the trading deadline. Not a $3 million dollar player, but $3 million in salary paid out from March 9th 'til the end of the season.
