Aftermath: The Dion Phaneuf trade to Ottawa

Been almost a year since the Leafs sent Phaneuf and forwards Matt Frattin, Casey Bailey, Ryan Rupert and defence prospect Cody Donaghey to the Senators in exchange for defenceman Jared Cowen, forwards Colin Greening, Milan Michalek and Tobias Lindberg as well as Ottawa’s second-round pick in the 2017 NHL Draft. Just wondering how everyone sees the trade today, any surprises on how things turned out?

Ottawa is in a playoff spot, Leafs are not.

Enough said.

Both teams have what they want.

I guess the only surprise is Michalek is playing in the AHL.

He's been a big reason for sure. Him compared to Cowen/ Wiercioch is night and day.
This is exactly what Ottawa envisioned when they made this trade, and I'm sure they also knew that it better work out early because the contract will look worse as he ages.

I'm sure Toronto is fine with the trade, though, they were starting a new era and got rid of an overpaid player.

ottawa got the defensive upgrade they needed and look to be a playoff team this year so they are happy with the trade.

Toronto got a prospect, a decent pick and long term cap space so they got a good return in that regard. It remains to be seen what type of prospect he will end up being given his ahl performance to date (it looks like his ahl points have dropped over the last 3 years). Leaf fans are happy in that Phaneuf and his massive deal are off the books. Personally I still think the leafs got the bad end of this deal in terms of value (basically a mid range 2nd round pick in a weak draft year and a questionable prospect for a second line defenseman isn't a great deal in my books).

There was zero market for Dion though. Pretty much all of the value to the Leafs was just getting that contract off the books. Both teams won. It's the kind of trade that you hope everyone turns out like, both sides getting what they wanted.

7 mill cap-hit x 7 years. The value in this deal is the saved salary space

Oh come on. The Leafs are far exceeding expectations and have looked better than when they had Dion. They are very close to a playoff spot when no one thought they would be. ( 3 points back with 5 games in hand)

I'm still shocked Ottawa took on the entire cap hit.
It's also strange seeing Sens fans loving him after they thought he was a useless pylon with a 7 million cap hit prior to the trade.

Very happy with the trade as a Sens fan so that's all that matters to me.

I think the difference is that Phaneufs role has changed with the switch of teams and he is in a role that at this stage in his career he is better suited for.

Fine, but he's still a 7 million cap hit in a more reduced role.
Obviously, having Phaneuf makes no sense for Toronto in a rebuild.

Bad trade for Ottawa then, bad now. Would be bad regardless but the fact that they helped out a rival team by taking on a bad contract and GIVING UP a 2nd and a decent prospect in the process makes it all the more terrible.

It's worked out for both sides. Ottawa needed a proven top 4 defenceman, amd Toronto wanted to get rid of Phaneuf's contract, which they were able to do without retaining salary.

Going forward, Phaneuf's contract will hurt the Sens, but he has helped the team.

The guy you really feel for is Michalek. He waives his no trade to go to the Leafs, which he probably didn't want to do and now he's in the minors.

We got rid of Phaneuf without having to retain. That's freaking incredible. I don't know how we pulled that one off.

Neither do I. No one on HF including Sens fans thought that would ever happen.

I liked Dion but I'd still do it 100/100 times. Because we got Auston Matthews.
