Nah, too much for one article. Make it two.

Seriously? A random 2nd round pick haunting a team? That is one of the most over dramatic things I've ever read. Was it a good move? Not a chance in hell. But a 2nd round pick is likely only having a minimal effect on a team. No way in hell it could actually haunt us. It's just being over dramatic.

Pick turned out to be Vitek Vanecek. Haunting. That was a very weak draft from the second round and beyond.

Cheveldayoff actually said that they figured they could recoup the pick if they needed to. But the market fell out from under rentals that year and Setoguchi was drinking two bottles of Jameson a day.

He actually scored 11 goals and 16 assists crippled by alcoholism. Were the market normal and his demons vanquished, maybe they could've even upgraded to a 1st.

I knew about his issues before the trade. If I knew (and I alluded to it at time of trade as well, albeit since I did not have proof I couldn't outright state it) then Cheveldayoff most certainly should have known. So I don't buy any excuse about Setoguchi's personal demons, Chevy should have known that going in.

It's very weird. It seems clear that the Jets must have known about his substance abuse problems (it would be on his own personal organizational file). If they knew, they either underestimated the problem thinking it wouldn't effect his play or that they would be able to get him help and possibly make his on ice play better.

Seeing how he went on the radio and said that he was drunk/hungover/high off the coca cola by midseason for most practices, he wasn't getting much help here. Maybe he refused to enter rehab if the team asked?

Agree.

But everyone likes a reclamation project and hopes they'll turn out good. I hope the Jets have learned their lessons.

By his account, it was a personal low for Setoguchi. It's pretty hard to guess that if you trade for him his substance abuse issue will get worse.

Just like you don't trade for a guy with injury issues assuming they're going to get worse. Yes, you need to be aware and you should pay a lower price, but don't assume they'll get worse.

In any case, there are many variables in play that could bring it from a decent plan, to a risky/rewarding plan, to something so dire the Jets will be forever 'haunted' by it.

Maybe they knew, but didn't know the extent.
Maybe they knew, but also knew he was blasted for his whole 30 goal season.
Maybe they knew, but his agent said he was going to rehab.
Et cetera.

I'm not saying it was a good plan, or an okay plan, but it might have been based on things we have no idea about. And out of Cheveldayoff's own mouth the plan was certainly not to acquire him with a 2nd and let him sit on the roster until July 1st even though they were outside the playoffs.

As much as that makes sense (and yes you were all over this) it is shocking how some clubs actually don't hear about some larger issues? So there is that and the fact TNSE's PI budget was tapped out keeping EK9 out of the news in Winnipeg

I missed the segment, but apparently Elliotte Friedman was talking about how the Flames met with the NHL about being the most penalized team in the league.

Classic Burkie, one of the whiniest execs in hockey history. Whined during the 2002 Wings-Canucks series ("Sedin is not English for punch me"). Whined about the pettiest **** in the 2007 Ducks-Wild series, we're talking complaints about the Xcel Centre video board operator showing replays of fights and hits that injured. Whined with the Leafs about "rats taking the game over". Whining now.

It's not MLCC's job to decide how much people can drink.
