They aren't good enough. Yet.
That's why the west coast swing will be telling. They'll face off against 3 western conference playoff teams and high scoring Dallas team and a Yotes team that is till a disaster.

If they go 4-1 on the trip, I think they become buyers. Not saying they'll throw everything away from rentals, but they'll be looking at pieces that can help now and in the future.

Like to see a bit of both if that`s possible, rid themselves of those named Hayes/Liles, try to secure that 3rd round pick for Moore to get back the pick they lost with the deals last year and I`d move one of Quaider/K Miller

I think with the right acquisitions, this team can remove some pieces, get something back and still play at a high level

Absolutely no rentals, unless it's to fill out roster spots or cap for bigger deals.

Long term game, Donny. Long term.

I think I agree but to a point.

I'm not big on trading a first round pick for Hanzal or a true rental.

If they get Lando and Tuytin for a package where the goal is for long term, then yes, buy.

I always thought this team wasn't that far off.

The 3 wins set them up very well for this week off and teams chasing with GIH. We will see where they are at week's end and then they need to get off to a good start on the road.

It was said in another thread, if DS can do a deal without Carlo and Mac, I'll be thrilled!

I buy the best non-rental young D man they can get, with hopefully 2017 picks and some of the lesser profile draft picks. This means one of K miller or McQuaid is gone as well.

Buyer if returning player is prospect or has term. Sell Moore and Liles if possible

Reality check time.

San Jose - a good team obviously but they were on an east coast trip and slumping at the same time.

Vancouver - not a very good team. Barely beat them but a good win.

Montreal - after their really good start they have been a .500 team for the last 40 games or so. So let's not be fooled that they beat a real good team. A good win though because of how historically bad the B's have been against them.

B's are experiencing the "new coach bump" but the coaching change did not fix the holes in the lineup. So my vote is sellers for the right deal that will help to fix them long term.

Now if they have a good west coast trip then opinions may change. But still don't want them to buy for a short term playoff run when they have long term needs.

I agree. Complicating factor this year is that we need to hold on to someone to expose for the expansion draft. Lose your deadwood early and you may risk losing a keeper...

Same answer as before from me

Sell dead-weight, buy long term.

I voted buy but, I want to see how they do on the West Coast trip. If they can take 2 or 3 of those games I'm on board to buy. Don't see rentals being a good fit unless it's something cheap to improve the bottom lines significantly.

Just be smart Sweeney.

I'm sort of there as well.

I won't get too worked up if they don't move Liles and Moore at the deadline for a 5th and 4th round draft pick in 2018.

I really don't know. I've never been more on the fence about a team. I want to believe but it's like being lied to repeatedly... and then coming back for more. My head says: this team has too many holes and is going to finish in 9th place. My heart says: let's just go for it, you only live once, we have our best guys who are right in their primes. So I don't know.

Eh, **** it. Let's buy.

I agree with Fenway. The front office, and the Jacobs in particular, don't want to be seen at all as tanking, or not making a "full effort" to make the playoffs. They'd rather have 5 years of one-and-done playoffs than miss the playoffs 4 times and have one deep run. I can see that - it's more profitable to them.

Missing the playoffs twice in a row when it was literally promised to the fans by the captain of the team, and after the threat last year of Charlie (or was it the year before?) puts the Bruins in danger of losing the fan base. That means empty seats, and not because of winter weather. The glow of a Stanley Cup only lasts so long.

The Bruins will do anything they can to make the playoffs. There's only 5 games until the deadline - all against the West, so no "bonus points" for taking a game from a divisional, or even a conference, rival. California will be critical. So will the games by other teams. If we're in playoff position, or within 2-3 points of playoff position, they'll buy.

That could be dangerous. I still have nightmares about our Western Canada/Midwest trip two years ago, which is, IMO, when the Bruins started to go off the rails. We've got that trip in March, after the deadline, and if we only get 1 or 2 points there, we're going to be in a bad place.

Long term game, Donny. Long term.
Agreed. I have no problems with buying as long as they contribute past this season and are involved in the future picture.

As much as it is obvious to me that a change in philosophy and system is clearly benefiting this team (the team is simply better suited to be offensive than defensive), I need to see more.

As someone else said, I need to evaluate after this road trip.

I'm still heavily leaning toward sellers, but if they do something crazy like go 3-0-0 on this road trip, I'll reconsider. As happy as I am about what Cassidy is doing, I feel like I'd be naive to think it's all better and a coaching change is all that we needed to be a playoff contender this year.

Still think there are too many spare parts that need to be replaced with legitimate players, and I don't see that happening whether we are buyers or sellers during a trade deadline.
