How come Vermette and Koivu weren't lined up over the dot? They're about a foot beside it.

That's literally a slash...

What's the point of face-off circle hash marks in general? Seriously do players ever use them correctly?

I know this particular play was a neutral zone face-off, but still.

I know, I feel terrible about it. It was brutal.

It's called a difference of opinion. I'll get over it. The officials have been garbage this game. Vermette was displaying his frustration. He made a mistake. I'm sure he'll have a few choice words with the NHL when they suspend him, and they should.

Probably 10 games. This is now 2 incidents in 2 years. This stuff never used to happen. If it continues to happen punishments need to be harsher. Make it automatic 20 games without pay. No one will touch the ref then.

You and I have a different opinion of "Throw the book at"....if they threw the book at him, he wouldn't play in the NHL ever again (and I would be okay with that). Wideman only got 10 games, so not sure what this will get, but I'm hoping for 10 games (though then likely reduced on appeal to 5 or something).

Wonder if the refs go with a 3 or 10 game suspension. Didn't seem to be any real damage done, but you just don't see players intentionally whack officials with their sticks. Wouldn't be surprised if they go for 10 games.

40.2 Automatic Suspension – Category I - Any player who deliberately strikes an official and causes injury or who deliberately applies physical force in any manner against an official with intent to injure, or who in any manner attempts to injure an official shall be automatically suspended for not less than twenty (20) games. (For the purpose of the rule, “intent to injure” shall mean any physical force which a player knew or should have known could reasonably be expected to cause injury.)
40.3 Automatic Suspension – Category II - Any player who deliberately applies physical force to an official in any manner (excluding actions as set out in Category I), which physical force is applied without intent to injure, or who spits on an official, shall be automatically suspended for not less than ten (10) games.
40.4 Automatic Suspension – Category III - Any player who, by his actions, physically demeans an official or physically threatens an official by (but not limited to) throwing a stick or any other piece of equipment or object at or in the general direction of an official, shooting the puck at or in the general direction of an official, spitting at or in the general direction of an official, or who deliberately applies physical force to an official solely for the purpose of getting free of such an official during or immediately following an altercation shall be suspended for not less than three (3) games.
The rules in question. They could easily push for 20 if they're so inclined.

Not cool, guy doesn't get ready for face off and slashes the ref. Punish him NHL, can't allow that to ever happen.

I would be ok with a 10 game suspension. That kind of behaviour is unacceptable.

That's worth 5 games.

It doesn't matter that it was a little love tap, it was clearly intentional.

Hard to argue for 'intent to injure'. I think it would be the 10 game category at most.

Doesn't really matter TBH. Gaudreau got "tapped", and his finger broke. The only thing that matters is whether there is intent. You can't argue it wasn't intentional since he was looking right at him, therefore hes probably going to get 8-15 games.

NHL takes these suspensions more seriously then department of players safety.

I've give that 10 games. That's literally the definition of abuse of an official and wasn't just a tap. Need to have an extremely strong zero tolerance response to that.

10 instead of 20 as there was seemingly no intent to cause injury.

I'm sure they'll spin the wheel of punishment on this one. Could be anything or nothing at all.
