Leafs vs Jets coming up soon, I suspect this thread will end up as the GDT. Hope it isn't a low scoring affair, atleast not from Toronto's side

Matthews vs. Laine is a very close race. Dead even. Most exciting battle we've had for the Calder since Ovechkin vs. Crosby in 05-06. All in all, doesn't matter who wins (hope the fans can remember this, it's not like you make the Hall of Fame for winning the Rookie of the Year or it impacts a player's legacy in a meaningful manner). Both will have great careers, but fun to follow.

Laine is going to rewrite history with his GWG's as an 18 year old.

I remember posting yesterday that he'd probably score another hatty against the Stars. He did. I hope he continues.

Why so many people count Marner out of race? He has been much better than Matthews in the second part of season. Anyway you should prepare to lose, because my man Pate will take this.

Laine's second goal was a thing of beauty. Not many players in the world can shoot like that and he also stripped Eaves from getting the puck. Amazing.

It would be cool if Laine broke the GWG record for 18 year olds in the same year that Matthews broke it for all rookies

Christ. The release on that second goal. Only a handful of guys in the league who are capable of that kind of goal.

You can tell when the rookies had especially strong showings when the topic gets 300 posts in a little over three hours.

At this point, I don't really care who wins The Calder, and I'm tired of the pissing contest. I just want to sit back and enjoy the fact that these two rookies are showing an exceptional level of play for their age, and I hope this is the start of a new generation of golden talent in the NHL. I mean, other than McEichel laat season. >_>

In 5 games against the Stars, Laine has 8 goals and 4 assists for 12 points. Has any rookie ever destroyed a team with that kind of PPG pace?

I'd be curious to see what Selanne did against expansion fodder early on. Plus, there are the records from the 80's. But, what Laine has done to the Stars is ridiculous.

Edit: Selanne got 8 goals and 3 assists in 4 games vs the Stars in 1992-93, when they still played in the mid-west. He also got 19 points in 9 games vs the Oilers, and 15 in 7 games vs the Sharks.

Edit 2: Surprisingly Crosby or Ovi didn't own a team to this extent as rookie. Malkin absolutely destroyed the Leafs as a rookie getting 13 points in 4 games, but only 2 goals.

Yeah, that's what makes him such a special player. Now don't get me wrong, he's a great offensive player even without that release. But what elevates Laine from other great offensive prospects is his release. It's so dangerous and effectively makes him a threat everywhere on the offensive zone. I'm a big fan of goal-scorers and Laine has the rare ability that I just love. Probably my favorite player in the world (not sure if he's passed OV in my books yet, but it's getting close).

He has takeaways like that just about every night. I thought protecting the puck along the boards, patiently pulling Leddy off his coverage to make a no-look pass (in traffic) to Brown, then out-hustling his man to the front of the net was also pretty cool.

Kudos to Brown for knowing he'd get there and waiting it out.

It was actually an Islander who passed it to Brown but anyways a nice goal.

I suggest you watch it again. Matthews makes the pass then drives the net waiting for the return feed.

Edit: Actually, you may be right.

Yeah Matthews and Laine is a very close race for second place.
Marner is currently the front runner for the Calder. His defense has been top notch all season long as well and he has more points than both Matthews and Laine.

I have watched it several times and it was Cizikas who touched the puck. The replays show that pretty well. Lets not make an argument over a fact.
