March GM meetings

http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/3...oms-canadiens/

Quote:
One year ago, NHL GMs considered changing the offside rule, making it so that “breaking the plane” above the blue line was the deciding factor — like with an NFL touchdown — as opposed to getting your skate down on the ice. They decided to wait and see how this year went. There’s momentum to go ahead, make the change at next month’s meetings, feeling the number of reviews could drop by half if the rule is amended. Anything that speeds up the process and adds goals is a win.
Goals = good for business too.

Just get rid of the ridiculous challenge altogether.

Yeah, I've never quite understood the offside rule, got to hope any change would make it more understandable.

AP: Video review, concussion protocol among topics for meeting this week

Quote:
The playoffs are still a month away, and teams already are not reacting well to concussion protocol for goalies, which is why it’s one of the topics that general managers are expected to discuss at their annual March meeting beginning Monday in Boca Raton, Florida. [Arizona Coyotes Mike] Smith and New York Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist are among those who have been critical of the rule.

Other issues as GMs try to refine rules they’ve put in place in recent years include the offside rule, coaches’ challenges, goalie equipment and goalie emergencies.

Video review is among the hottest topics, especially the time it takes. Major League Baseball recently instituted timing guidelines for umpires, and that could soon happen for hockey officials.
Have to wonder if things will be clarified before playoffs.

Nice update from GMGM on expansion draft plans for Vegas.

And sounds like there will be an Olympic update (although it might not be on the agenda).

Quote:
According to an email from NHL commissioner Bill Daly, the Olympic decision is a “board issue.” That doesn’t mean this week’s meetings lack substance. From the bye week and the offiside rule to the concussion protocol and goalie equipment, here are four issues up for debate.

It's amusing that someone who's know for flopping as much as Lundqvist can be so critical of concussion protocol. Perhaps if goalies didn't make it seem like they just got their bell ring every time someone makes the slightest contact with them, the spotters wouldn't 't be so quick to pull them out of the game. Just saying.

maybe goalie interference should be 4 minutes instead of 2 minutes. Prevent excessive goalie crashing.

LeBrun's preview.

Considering coach's challenge without timeout resulting in minor penalty if unsuccessful, among other topics.

From LeBrun's article:

Debate the merits of a coach's challenge with no timeouts left (resulting in a minor penalty if the challenge fails).

This sounds like a bad, bad idea. One a game is enough, that way it forces coaches to be careful using a challenge.

I say give them two regardless of time out, that way a team won't get abused for losing the only challenge they got. I also want the challenge to go directly to Toronto instead of the ref. It not fair for these guys to review their own decision, it also not fair for the teams on the ice. Get the review away from confirmation bias, snap judgement, and crappy tablet resolution.

How about getting some officials off the ice. Offsides can be called from the line(off ice) the second ref can be off by ice. I'm thinking of a penalty box type area for them allowing them to be on ice when needed.

The level of interference in the gameplay is unacceptable IMHO. Too many bodies out there.

Will there be any discussion regarding the future of the Coyotes? They have a serious problem on their hands, at what point does the BOG say," enough is enough?"

No question the ice is crowded, but i can`t see the referees handling face offs and other on ice needs?

The linesmen could still do faceoffs. I'm suggesting they have the ability to come on and off the ice as needed.

Do you have a link to show the AZ ultimatum came as an out growth of the BOG meeting.

Bettman was at GM meeting and made statement.

Next BOG meeting won't be until Stanley Cup Finals. Don't recall anything coming out of January ASG BOG meeting on this.

Thanks. That was my logic, too. I simply hadn't seen anything like, "We discussed this at the BOG meeting today, and need to make this statement." So, the connection is inferred, but yet powerful.

Thanks again, LS

GMs do not want protected lists to be publicized in advance of expansion draft. Per LeBrun.

Will make for speculation until results made public.

But apparently the league IS planning on televising the VGK expansion draft (reveal).
