The curious case of: Joffrey Lupul.

Tonight I was randomly thinking about a certain player that I haven't heard about in what seems like forever: Joffrey Lupul.

Lupul once scored 67 points in 66 games in the 2011-2012 season with the Leafs which that year, he was selected for his first all star appearance.

Lupul has a career PPG avg of 0.60. Last season Lupul appeared in just 46 games, scoring 14 points... 0.30 ppg.

At the beginning of the season, Lupul showed up to training camp and was deemed "unfit", sidelined on the IR. The last time he played in a leafs uniform was 378 days ago.

What the heck is up with him? Is his career over?
How did his career go downhill so fast? Was it solely because of injuries?

TML fans/others with knowledge fill me in...

He's essentially finished. Think Horton, Pronger, Savard, Ohlund, etc..

Betting on him getting injured was pure money in the bank. Just never knew which one would finally be for good

Injuries. His skating and play dropped off a lot in the last season he played.

Done like dinner. Had a good amount of talent, was made out of glass. Lupul is fine with it though, gives him more time to focus on being Joffrey Zoolander.

He spent a lot of time on the IR every year. Not all that surprising that he seems to be done in the league.

With that being said, this could definitely be a case of sending a guy to "Robidas Island" and basically its Lou saying just "stay hurt" and take the money or go ride the bus. The Leafs have a lot of young guys coming up that need roster space and Lupul did't really fit in in the role his injuries have forced him to play in. It would be interesting to see if he would be trying to play on a different team.

It's a shame, because for a while when he was healthy he was one of the leafs most important players and I thought he could have been a key part of the team

I liked Lupul too as a Ducks fan. Shame he has gotten so many injuries.

Lupul is the Vince Carter of the Oilers. Good riddance.

What's curious about it? He had a lot of injuries.

Lupul was an amazing player, was one of the top choices to be captain at one point. Injuries hit him hard

Prime Lupul was actually a fantastic offensive player.

It's only curious to wonder what he could have been. Certainly not curious as to why he wasn't.

Sad that his career was hampered so much by injuries. Vaguely remember him scoring 4 goals in the playoffs but it was Cinco De Mayo & tequila shots had been involved.

I really liked him. But yeah injury prone players tend to have shorter careers. No surprise

I'll never forget the time Dion took a slap shot and shattered Lupuls arm. Tons of talent, made of glass.

Pretty sure he was healthy enough to make the team. Don't think the team wanted him around though.

Yeah it definitely sounds like he was simply told to either be 'injured' or we're sending you to the Marlies where you can ride the bus.

IIRC Kadri was quoted before training camp saying how pumped Lupul was to be back healthy and ready to go for the season. Possible he re-injured something, but I feel like its more of a Robidas case where the guy just wasn't in the plans and had lots of health concerns.

Too many injuries, he seemed like he lost his compete level when he came back. Looked slow and disinterested, pretty sure Babcock wasn't a fan of his either.

He said he had a hernia surgery.

No one has seen him since.

Sad situation. Hard to believe it was almost nine years ago
that he scored that game 7 OT goal for us.

My guess on what happened.

He has several nagging injuries, things that surgery can't fully fix. So his options were to either go on LTIR, which because he has nagging injuries, is a legitimate option. Or to get waived and play for the Marlies.

There was no way he was going to play for the Leafs this season. He's simply not an NHL calibre player even if healthy at this point. Can't put up points anymore, isn't a shutdown player, isn't a high energy crash n banger, etc.

I heard they're trying to void Joffrey's contract...they have their lawyers looking for a Lupul.
