Burns for the Hart

Our writer Tony took at look at why Brent Burns should be in the Hart Trophy conversation.

He's the MVP for sure IMO.

Sharks would be complete trash this season without him.

Sharks are not a playoff team without Burns. With him, they are one of the better teams in the league.

If Hart voting is really for most valuable player to their team, Burns has to be up there with McDavid.

I don't think people really realize how bad the rest of the team has been most of the season. Up until recently, he had been the only guy creating any offense. Only of late have Marleau and Pavelski started to put the puck in the net with some frequency. Even at that though, Burns has been carrying the team all season. Not at all a stretch to say the Sharks would miss the postseason this year without him.

Have to agree. Burns had had the Sharks on his back for pretty much all this year.

Honestly I agree, I think Burns deserves the Hart.

Also, HF should really just get on board with the fact that the Hart goes to the best player to in the NHL for that season as voted by the media.

That SHOULD be Burns, but might not be.

If it was for who is truly the MVP, then it would and should be Burns.

Although Crosby should be in the conversation...imo its neck and neck between McDavid and Burns.

Downfall for Crosby is Malkin is a top 5 scorer. So really...he isn't having to carry the Pens alone

He does have a case ... but no one's meant more to a franchise and city than McJesus. The incremental difference between the Oiler with and without McJesus is astronomical. I'm no Oiler fan ... but no one means more to a franchise, on and off the ice, than McJesus. Sid did the same early in his career.

He's definitely making a good case. I think at this point the finalists would be McDavid, Crosby and Burns. We'll see how much the bias against defensemen for the Hart comes into play.

To me the one that means more is the Ted Lindsay Award...as its voted amongst other players.

I think Burns is a finalist but I don't know about the winner. McDavid makes a very strong case right now and I'd probably side with him simply based on how Edmonton was before his arrival and how they've done in their first full season with him. McDavid can make the same case that Burns can in terms of carrying the team on his back. It's going to come down to preference on what one may think is more impressive. A d-man being the reason a team is as good as they are or 19-20 year old being the reason a team is as good as they are. Crosby is still the best player in the league, imo, but this tends to go to whichever is the more popular story when it's relatively close like it is.

The Lindsay/Pearson has more "wtf" picks over the years though. I'm not sure the players see much of the guys they don't play often

I think if Burns can continue to hold his scoring pace relative to Crosby and McDavid he is going to win.

McDavid is going to own the Hart for the next few seasons, I suspect he wins it 3 out of the next 5, if not more. The voters may realize this so it is going to come down to Crosby winning is 3rd and likely last or giving it to a defenceman.

Burns hasn't won the Norris yet. I don't think he sweeps both Norris and Hart in the first year that he's a contender for both. The Hart will go to either Sid or McJesus. I think McJesus gets it at this point.

If Burns manages to win the scoring title somehow, it doesn't matter if he's won the Norris yet. He would get the Hart. I don't see that happening but Burns wouldn't be the first guy ever to win while not being a contender prior to the year. Pronger did it in 2000. It doesn't happen often granted but it's not unprecedented for it to happen. But I do agree at this point, it's likely McDavid's to lose. Burns isn't far behind since his season is historic.

Crosby, Burns and McDavid should be the finalists. But McDavid should win. The Oilers were 29th last year and the Sharks/Penguins were battling for the Cup. No question who has the worst cast of players surrounding them.

If Burns does the impossible and wins the scoring title, I won't argue if he gets the Hart. I just don't see it happening. That doesn't mean he hasn't had a great season.

Penquins have 3 players in the top 10 in scoring. They are still a very good team without Crosby. He is still the best/most outstanding player in the world (Ted Lindsay Award) but I would not vote for him as the most valuable to his team (Hart).
