Irvine is not adjacent to Anaheim. Your good friend is geographically challenged.

I live 5 miles from the Pond and haven't been to a game there in 5 - 6 years. Just don't like going there anymore. Any game I go to now is worth the 25 mile trek downtown to see the Kings at Staples.

And of course for the entire season, I've watched maybe a combined 30 minutes of Ducks tv broadcasts.

Depends on where in Irvine you are. It was almost 20 miles and an hours drive in traffic from my house in Irvine to the Honda Center. Yes, so it's a five minute walk from Irvine to the Honda Center.

I think more people in SoCal care about their minor league team, The Gulls, than they do the Ducks.

I grew up closer to LA than Anaheim and I was a huge Ducks fan. A pretty anecdotal example for sure, but so is your buddy's.

The Ducks certainly faced a bit of an uphill battle carving their niche in socal once the novelty of a new franchise wore off. I think the Samuelis are going about it the right way putting money into youth hockey and infrastructure.

As with many younger sunbelt franchises success is key in keeping casual fans engaged. The Ducks have had recent success but the game 7 letdowns haven't helped. Hopefully those are a thing of the past.

The Ducks will be fine but will struggle with fair weather attendance just like the other pro teams around there do. Aside from the Lakers and the Dodgers to an extent.

If by "SoCal" you mean San Diego and its immediate environs, then sure.

So that means they get less total viewers than the Coyotes and Panthers. Those aren't tiny TV markets

The Los Angeles market is about 3 times larger than Arizona. I'd wager that .2% of SoCal is greater than .4% of Arizona. Not sure of the exact population covered by the Panthers but there's only a .06% viewership difference between them and the 2nd largest metropolitan region in the country. I'd say that neither Florida nor Arizona has more viewers than Anaheim.

The Samuelis might be losing money on the team but they're making money on the arena from what I understand.

So what is Anaheim's TV market? Are fans of both LA and Anaheim able to see the other team? I don't think I'm for that.

As a budget team until this years Murray fiasco,
The Samuelis certainly don't want to lose too much each year,
But since they bought the Ducks, one of the biggest gains is simply
The current value of the franchise. Year to year losses will be written down,
But that gain is pretty substantial.

And anyone who drives to Staples for games, and lives in central/south Orange County deserves
A medal, that drive is hideous

Anaheim is considered part of the LA market. FOX West has the rights to both NHL teams.

I believe Fox Sports West/Prime Ticket goes to about central California and down to San Diego with no NHL blackouts.

Southern Nevada is part of the FSWest territory, though I'm sure NHL games will be blacked out next year.

How much of a handicap was the whole "Mighty Ducks" thing in terms of attracting fans to the franchise in the early days? Maybe it's just my east coast cynicism, but I was like twelve years old when they debuted and even at that age I thought it was a joke. I could have lived across the street from the Arrowhead Pond and I still would've been embarrassed to call myself a Mighty Ducks fan.

The Vegas TV contract is going to be fascinating to watch. ROOT Sports Utah will make a bid by creating a ROOT Sports Nevada but would also beam the games to the Pacific NW like they do with the NBA Jazz.

My instinct tells me Vegas might hook up with FOX West and allow the Kings and Ducks to keep Nevada and in return Golden Knights games can be seen in SoCal.

Southern California-Las Vegas reciprocity is worth waaaaaay more to the Golden Knights than it is to the Kings and Ducks. I can't see that. Maybe the Golden Knights on a local subfeed of Prime Ticket. But they'll probably end up with Root Sports Utah.

If you look at the Chicago White Sox vs Cubs it's the same issue. It's tough to get recognition playing second fiddle in the same big city, when you're based in a suburban market that other suburbs wouldn't have much loyalty too, and especially when the big team has done better recently. If you put a Toronto2 team down in Markham it would have the same problem.

55-ish years older if you are talking about from the time the Devils were actually in NJ.
