Gage always had an eye for talent. I still think he'd be perfect.

I have faith whoever Botterill gets will be up to the task.

Agreed. But long time Amerks fans would especially like to see Gage involved again. I have faith already in Botterill that I never had in Murray or Regier.

I'm a fairly old school fan, old enough to remember Ol' Jody as player. I know he's had this role in the past for quite some time, but I do wonder if he is ready and capable of taking on the job of Amerks GM while really contributing as a member of the Sabres' front office.

Anyone know if Botterill had a consistent approach to the 6 vet AHL roster positions in WBS? Or was it talent driven. E.g. If PIT had better D prospects relatively than F prospects, the vet spots went to F.

I'm a fan of having a disproportionate number of vet slots used on D, and I think in the. Sabres Amerks case that will remain true.

BUF organization could use 5 or 6 defensemen combined both levels for next year.

Be curious to see if Brady Austins callup earned him a re-sign with BUF.

I just can't find my way to thinking that the latter portion of that equation fits. He's had some "strategic development" role in Rochester for the past few years, but I have no idea what that means. Who knows how far or close he has been to scouting and talent acquisition. To be honest, the best opportunity I can see for Gage would be Assistant GM for the Amerks. No official role in the Sabres structure.

Should Hagel, Estephan and Pu be in Rochester for 2017/18 Season?

I think we should be marinating these 3. Hagel could be the best 6th round steal in a long while. Tim Murray looks like he did really well with his drafts.

Hagel and Pu are both 98s. They aren't eligible for the AHL this season.

Ah. Well one more season for Hagel to show and prove. This season impressed me.

So let's talk about who is out there for the Amerks. Is it time to finally bring Chris Mueller home? He's UFA and coming off a strong season for San Antonio. The local thing is nice, the production and years of wearing a letter are better. Do they bring Cole Schneider back? Was he consistent enough to warrant returning? Grant again or do they move on there (or does he move on....)? How about Bodie returning on the blueline?

No thanks to Bodie. I would like Fedun back. Botterill made mention of vets today, so there's definitely going to be several brought in.

I look at the D in WBS as a clue. Warsofsky? Gaunce? Maybe DeSmith if they need a goalie.

They also need tweener players. Guys with a few years experience, but not quite a veteran by AHL definition.

Wouldn't be surprised to see Taylor get this gig. He's been an assistant in the AHL for a few years, including W-B/S last year, and has connections to the Amerks organization.

That's possible for sure. I believe I read an article saying Botterill almost hired Geoff Ward for WBS. Assistant in NJ now.

Ward's got a ****-ton of experience. Could be a solid choice.

Other names with connections to Botterill (assuming Donatelli isn't going to lateral to another AHL job) besides Ward and Taylor:

Alain Nasreddine - Assistant in W-B/S for five seasons while Botterill was there. Has been a NHL assistant in New Jersey for the past two seasons. May want a shot at a head gig at some point, and he'd probably have to go the AHL route. But he's followed Hynes everywhere, so maybe he sticks around in Jersey with a head coach who obviously trusts him.

Todd Richards - Was the head coach in W-B/S for Botterill's first two seasons there, and the team had a lot of success. He was an assistant for the Lightning this season, but perhaps he wants to run a bench again. Helping to turn Rochester around may help his resume more than being an assistant for an established TB club.

I usually like coaches with pro experience, but Knoblauch would be a good get. He sounds like he's ready to coach in the AHL. If they're looking to groom future NHL coaches, this would be a no brainer.
