If they want to remain a contender, they need to make some moves for forward help. Kopitar, Carter, Toffoli, Pearson are good but 0 top 6 forwards other than those guys. I'd try to sell high on Martinez and hope some of their good young D prospects can make up for it.

All it takes is 1-2 wins against Edmonton and all of a sudden they're back in the picture

At this point it doesn't matter who they play unless it's the Blues or Preds, and they don't play either in the remaining 11.

They're done unless they go at least 8-1-2 or something, and even then still need the Preds/Blues to blow it.

Looked at Quanthockey, didn't know Kings is the oldest NHL team by average.

But that Gaborik contract is so bad. 2014 playoffs was his swan song, and everyone should have realized that at the time.

Yes and thankfully because the entire sport is better for it. No more clutch and grab boring Channel changing kings playoff games. I know they had some exiting games over the years but what a boring team overall.

I still have no idea who thought signing Gaborik to that contract was a good idea. They have 2 of the worst contracts in the league. Kopitar might as well be among them with his 10 goals, but it's probably just an off season for him.

It's going to be tough to fix that problem in order to bolster areas of need.

A team that didn't have enough scoring. I'd like to see the GM that would let a guy that scored 14 goals in the playoffs on the Cup winning team walk as a free agent. The years had to be added to keep the cap hit lower, and at the time Gaborik had the leverage.

It was a poor decision to give him term to keep the cap hit low at the time and now it seems like it was a horrific decision in hindsight. He only played 67 games in that season with the playoffs. He had a shooting percentage of 18% in the playoffs that gave him 14 goals.

I'm pretty sure you can add scoring to your team without giving a 7 year deal to a player that probably has the longest injury list of the league.

You might luck out though because it does look like to me a player going on LTIR very shortly.

Lombardi was trying to squeeze as much out of the roster that he could before everyone started getting bigger contracts, and his emotional loyalty to players that won for him has been his greatest strength and weakness. Which is funny, because when he got the job, the knock on him was that he was too married to prospects.

Gaborik had a really good 14-15 season, but that was also the year Kopitar set his previous full season career low in goals, and of course Voynov went and did something illegal.

I doubt that. It's never that kind of injury. It's always something smaller and nagging. It's not a broken body like Horton, or multiple concussions like Pronger. Gaborik is healthy enough to keep playing, unless they get a chance to do a Hawks/Kane LTIR until the playoffs type thing again, like they did with him last year after his knee got hurt.

Until shown otherwise, I'm working from the Kings are stuck with Gaborik scenario.

I think they're done.

I don't think they need a big rebuild, but a semi one for sure, they have a couple of dead wood players they need to move.

Huh, as a fan of a different team in the Pacific, I feel absolutely no safety yet that the Kings are out of it. If there is any team that will fight tooth and nail to the end, I'd expect it to be the Kings.

Brown and Gaborik kill them. You can get by with one toxic contract, but not two. Just imagine if they had not lucked out of the Richards contract because of him breaking the law.

That's what I thought too, but they really looked pretty bad last night in what was a must-win kind of game for them.

Hm... Interesting.

Remember a week ago when apparently the Oilers were the worst team in the West after an extremely minor skid and the Kings were apparently almost certain to pass them? Funny how things change. Oilers and Flames are both in for sure over the Kings. They're both playing good hockey and know what's at stake. There's no way either of those teams allow themselves to be taken out of the picture.

Yeah ,, Just isn't that good of a team

Talent upfront is not there and its D/G strengths are not enough to overcome weak offense

Sutter is also probably a bit stale now and Lombardi has done a **** poor job as GM since they won cup in 2014

Kings haven't been the same team that dominated during those cup runs, after losing Voynov. They failed to address that hole.

I hope so playoff ticket money is due in a week, and really don't want to send the Kings money so they can just hold it for me

Some changes coming this off season. New coach, maybe new GM

Trading Budaj for Bishop didn't really work out for them. 4 games for Bishop, all losses, gave up a nice prospect in the process. Serves them right for ruining a good story with Budaj - a guy comes from the minors, does way better than expected and keeps them in the race, only to be discarded for an established guy at the first opportunity. If this was a movie, Budaj would now go on to win the Cup with the Lightning.
