I've posted several times in this series of threads that I thought it was premature to rule out the Kings getting into the playoffs ... well, I'm changing my tune. I watched most of the game against Calgary last night and the speed and determination Calgary had was highlighted by the lack thereof from the Kings. It's a shame they couldn't get their mojo back, especially because I really dislike the Ducks and Sharks.

A play last night that sealed the deal for me was when Tkachuk elbowed Doughty in the jaw and no one stepped up to take a pound of flesh from young Mr. Tkachuk. That told me the players collective heart is not in the right place.

I don't think they need a big rebuild, but a semi one for sure, they have a couple of dead wood players they need to move.
The problem is Gaborik is unmovable, better off waiting for him to eventually land on LTIR and disappear, and Brown would cost them picks or prospects to move. LA has a weak farm system and need every pick they have already. They have a decision to make, they can ice the same team next season if Pearson, Toffoli, Gravel and Shore sign for under 11,500,000 total and they bring up a backup under 1.5 million. But what happens if Quick goes down? The league is going to keep getting better and they are staying the same.

The good news is Doughty, Carter, Kopitar, Martinez, Muzzin, and Quick all have huge value in a rebuild/retool so they are way better off than teams like Toronto (Everyone had NMC) or Edmonton were when they started rebuilding/retooling.

the kings were a good team. problem is their offense is anemic. if they could score they are in. look at the goal differential. well before last night it was close to 0. every team in the playoffs goal differential is in the +. every team out is in the - .

The Kings did well when many other teams were trying to be big, tough, and physical and play that slow-it-down-and-grind-it-out style of hockey. They did it better than anyone else. Now teams are starting to move away from that, opting for speed and skill and it just makes the Kings and other teams that try to play like them look slow and lethargic. Not to mention the kind of players Lombardi likes generally don't age well.

As much as I love Sutter and for all that he's done, LA needs a new coach. It's obvious the players have tuned him out. This summer is going to be interesting; hope we see Muzzin traded and Gaborik bought out.

Bleak future in LA. They've had their fun, but it's gonna be a rough decade ahead.

Why do the Kings want to move on from MUzzin?

They've been done since that big road trip in December. Never recovered from the slide.

Kopitar's 52-point pace seems insane.

Especially in light of the Brown fiasco.

Mcdavid will be free after next season. Nothing say money like LA. Ask number 99

I think L.A has to do a directional shift this summer. That may mean moving from the heavy game to a more balanced approach, a coaching change, roster moves etc.
I honestly feel L.A should be a more competitive team as it stands but woulda's, coulda's and shoulda's don't win championships.

He might. Who knows!

Bye bye Kings! It'll be nice to have new teams in the playoffs. I want to see how far McDavid takes the Oilers.

Yeah I think so too, they have players who can play a more speed/skilled game, it just comes down to the organizational philosophy with Sutter and Lombardi at the helm. After this season though I expect Sutter to step down and head back up to his farm, Lombardi will either leave LA completely or be moved into a role that doesn't involve making roster decisions. The Bishop deal will be the final nail in the coffin for Dean

The Kings have no excuse to miss the playoffs though, losing to teams like Vancouver, Arizona, and Colorado multiple times this season is unacceptable

If Nashville goes 5-6 and LA goes 8-3, then LA is in. If Nashville goes 4-7 and LA goes 7-4, then LA is in.

So LA still has a chance. Decisive losses to teams they are trying to catch definitely won't help their cause though.

I think the Kings might have the worst future of all 30 teams. That cap situation is a mess.

This year is over, even if we made the playoffs we wouldn't be contenders so whats the point? However, I don't think the situation is unfixable and the future isn't as bleak as some smirking posters on here want to believe. The rookies that have played this year have been a bright spot in the season: Dowd, Kempe, Gravel and Ladue have all have pretty solid rookie showings. DL definitely has some big issues to address this offseason but I think a new coach and some retooling of the offense could go a long way. Sutter's system was great during our runs but the rest of the league has evolved past it and he hasn't tweaked it to succeed. I would say the #1 priority should be trying to trade Muzzin for a forward, we badly need someone who can play on Kopitar's wing. Faceoffs have been a huge problem ever since Stoll left.

What about Edmonton?
