You have a point....but are going too far imo. It's bad but not garbage. Still be some talent come out of this draft.

There is no elite level talents at the top, but draft depth is decent.

Maybe this is the case with Doan? (the ironic part is...he might be next!!?).

Doan's value these days?:
3rd or 4th rnd pick? (or higher? 2nd rnd pick

Imo, if they make it to the Conference Finals and lose to Chicago or L.A. in 7...that still won't be bad. ''Massive choke'' (imo) will be a 1st rnd exit! That would be terrible for them. Conference Finals...6-7 games...also good for the owner ($$...!!).

Yeah, but they surely are looking better and better...and it all started with the acquisition of E.Staal (a la very cheap). He was made for playoffs (I take E.Staal over Joe Thornton...for playoffs).

Minn: let's remember...one or two key injuries before the playoffs (or during rnd 1) could change everything. Minn should have added Bishop!!? Imagine...6'7 Dubnyk and 6'6 Bishop!!!!!

I'm hoping L.A. could make the playoffs...Chicago, Minn, Edmonton and McDavid, St-Louis, San Jose, and maybe L.A. (if they make it) would make for a very entertaining playoffs

So happy our Habs are not in that Conference! (yet, it still doesn't look like we're taking advantage of a weaker Conference).

Get your popcorn out...could be an interesting playoffs (from the good Conference!)...Chicago, Minnesota, Edmonton finally in playoffs (can't wait to see how McDavid delivers when it counts), St-Louis, San Jose, L.A. (hoping they make it 'cause Playoffs-Doughty is fun to watch).

Wondering if Bergevin could find a way to make us better vs Rangers, Pitts, Wash for playoffs...any day now...any day!! (but still hoping for no overpayment).

No over-payment (unless we're almost guaranteed to win a CUP!?):
<Petry-esque dman for a 2nd+5th (became a 4th).
<Diaz for Weise.
<Vanek for 2nd (I forget what we gave?), but it was worth the risk even though he was GARBAGE in playoffs...garbage... can't pin this on Bergevin since most Hab fans loved the acquisition).

Vanek probably wishes he was still in Minn where he has a chance at a CUP. But, Vanek is no playoff warrior...quite the opposite (at least that what we saw when he played for our Habs in playoffs...huge zero/bum/floater...just staying away from any contact to get that big UFA contract with Minnesota).
Good post

I don't understand the harsh feelings towards Vanek. He played great vs the Lightning and Bruins until our dumb coach put him on the 4th line. Vanek can score and create offense and he did that in the 2014 playoffs. I would welcome him back with open arms. He's good on the PP and he is alot better then what we have now in the top 6. Vanek was robbed by Lundqvist in game #6. We ended up losing 2 to 0 with (empty Net). He was our best offensive foward in the playoffs with Bourque. Pacioretty and DD went missing too in the NYR series.

I would also take Vanek back, in a minute...the guy can score, and is a great playmaker...CJ would be a much better motivator for Vanek, and not to mention, Vanek only mkaes 2.6M this time around, so not much cap room is needed...and you wouldn't have to give up much to get him...............that being said, I think MB will grab Sharp from Dallas instead.

The only season in the last 5 where the habs finished well. The year we landed Vanek. The other 4 seasons we have sucked big time down the stretch.

Vanek was good against Tbay then Boston. I believe his game went south when he was knocked out with a head hit from none other than PK Subban. Pk through a huge hit at Smith, missed him and got Vaneks head ...crunch. Vanek down, then escorted to dark room. Came back, was a shadow of himself and on the fourth line next round.

It's seemingly bad enough to have devalued picks in every round, including the 1st, according to the guys that deal with these assets.

No longer. 2014 is ancient history. Vanek was drafted in 2003 and he's too old now. He went to Minnesota but the Wild got rid of him. The Red Wings got desperate but he couldn't help them get into the playoffs.

From the video, I'm not sure how you can blame Dunn. Gabriel came at him, not the other way around.

I know he was up for a huge raise as an UFA and, surely, getting injured would've wrecked his financial future but, I didn't see him eating popcorn on the bench and refusing to go out on the ice when called upon...

It wasn't that blatant that Vanek played poorly on purpose to save his own hide. Was this a period in history where you all loved Therrien and he wasn't at fault? Obviously, the coach had something to do about not maximizing Vanek's skills or, it was Desharnais' fault, somehow

Lol a Vanek. Truly useless when it matters, a pure floater. We are trying to add players that will excel when the season gets tougher, not the opposite. We saw it when he was here, no hustle left in him, too old and slow for playoffs. Wild quickly saw the same thing and bought him out in a hurry.

Dunn obviously said something to Gabriel before he came over to him (you clearly see that) but, Gabriel is an idiot for coming over instead of just saying, "Your Mama too," or something along those lines. The commentary accompanying the video clearly states this is grounds for a suspension in relation to Gabriel coming over, not Dunn sending him flat on his ass!

Anger issues are really a possibility, though. Gabriel coming over doesn't mean that Dunn doesn't have anger issues.

Lol. Vanek played himself down to the 4th line. Pure revisionist history to blame the coach.

I'm not Vanek's biggest fan, believe me but, a floater? Do you even know what a floater does? I just don't understand what you mean. He's got plenty of faults and a few strengths but, floater?

The previous poster wasn't inventing anything aout 90% of the team going AWOL against NYRs, including the team top guns, of which Vanek was one.

Vanek wasn't/isn't a power forward, the same way that Pacioretty isn't a power forward. However, Vanek scored his goals from much closer in to the crease than Pacioretty.

Vanek's strength like Pacioretty's, was to find open ice from where to take shots. His real strength was his ability to protect the puck in traffic, long enough to take a crisp shot at the net.

Skating was okay, passing was actually surprisingly good, although that's not his go-to option.

I believe that Vanek is still a good complementary piece to a puzzle. I just don't know if Montreal has the pieces to be that puzzle.

You can't play Vanek and Pacioretty on the same line, IMO, too much of the same waiting game, generally speaking.

Vanek needs a player like Radulov on his line, a player that can draw opponents' attention and can feed the puck to an open Vanek. Vanek will get open for a shot.

Now, can Pacioretty still be productive on another line, one without Radulov, because robbing from Peter to pay Paul won't solve any problems?

Would Pacioretty - Galchenyuk - Gallagher/Lehkonen be a strong enough option?

Would Danault between Vanek and Radulov be a significant drop off than Danault between Pacioretty and Radulov?

The problem is Gallagher and Danault, IMO, not adding Vanek or not.

Is Danault a viable top-6 C? Maybe for the playoffs because he plays a forechecking, N/S style of hockey and has shown that he has no quit this season. So, Danault might not be a real problem, despite not being a stellar option.

Gallagher's lack of Offense is what really worries me. Would he be an anchor on the Pacioretty - Galchenyuk - Gallagher line or, would the tighter playoff games play more to hs style? If he were an anchor, he would still be a decent option for the 3rd or 4th line, IMO. Lehkonen could be a good off-wing option on a line of Pacioretty - Galchenyuk - Lehkonen, with shot options all around.

Lehkonen, like Danault on the first line, would also add some defensive responsibility to their offensive line.

I'd go Byron - Plekanec - Gallagher/Shaw on the third

and

Shaw - Boyle - McCarron on the 4th as Boyle should be an inexpensive pick-up if the Habs really wanted him. I'd love the sandpaper on this line for a playoff matchup.

Vanek might not have been worth his contract in Minnesota but he still managed to average 50 point seasons. Those 50 points would be welcomed in Montreal who are using the likes for Byron, Flynn and Desharnais in the Top 6.

Hes been money in Detroit this season and not getting him just because he couldn't help his team make the playoffs is beyond absurd.

Question I have is who would you rather have as a top 6 LW. Byron or Vanek?

Habs should get Kulikov who is way better than Nesterov and acquire Varbata to play on the second line.

Yes, 2 points in 36 games and a -15 is what this team desperately needs! Go for it Bergy!

Based on what I'm reading, it seems Byron would be the popular answer

Kulikov is really not very good.

At this point I'd find it difficult to care about Vanek floating if he'd manage to get our second line scoring.

I don't see how you can blame that incident on Dunn. He was confronted by a much larger player. Gabriel is a tough guy, but, yeah, considering how Dunn just lost it during the on-ice incident & then the off-ice one you can tell he has a temper. He just flipped out.
