Marchand isn't even the best player on his own team.

Wait, I thought we were talking right now, not 6 years ago. . .

Make up your mind

This year he has been. Bergeron, Pastrnak have not matched his scoring consistency. Rask has struggled a little as well lately.

Forsberg and Toews are right there with him, but Marchand has been amazing.

OBVIOUSLY the OP is hyperbole, but I still don't think people view him as a guy who is going to finish in the top 10 in goals two years in a row, while playing a solid all around game.

That is simply not true. Maybe not in terms of careers, but this season he's been the best player by a significant margin.

Wow, neat. I think it's actually Filip Forsberg. I mean, if your entire argument is predicated on "right now" than beat 8 goals and 10 points in the last 4 games.

It's gonna get confusing when he cools off and another guy goes on a hot streak though.

A hot season does not make you the world's best. I think Marchand has developed into a great player but don't talk nonsense.

What are Forseberg's stats in 2017???

In the year 2017, Brad Marchand is currently the best ice hockey player in the world.

That's nothing to do with streaks. 2017. So far. He is the best. And it's NOT CLOSE at all.

So to summarize:

Without Player X, Y or Z:

The Bruins don't win the cup

I can be a happy Canucks fan in 2011

The cup returns to Canada

The Canucks become a dynasty

Did I miss anything ?

He and Bergeron are two of the greatest two way players of this generation. Neither is even top 10 I think in the NHL.

He definitely has the most points

Marchand in 2017 - 23GP - 17G - 16A - 33 Points - 1.43 P/GP - 0.74 Goals/GP

Most goals, 17th in assists, 2nd in points per game and 1st in goals per game since January 1st 2017. So you could definitely say in 2017 he has been one of the best. But playing at a high level for two months does not make you "the best hockey player in the world right now."

He's first in PPG with his 3 points today.

Crosby is the defacto. Crosby could have a 3 point month and would still "be the best". Am I right?

How does a player who is
- #1 in goals
- #1 in GPG
- #1 in points
- #1 in PPG

in 2017 year not be allowed to "be the best player in the league"? Because his face looks like a rat to some shallow people? Or that his demeanor is that of a pest?

It doesn't make sense.

Sid putting up those stats = top 5 all time
Marchand putting up those stats = still not allowed to be considered

Yeah NHL didn't have those in yet on their stats sight.

No because you don't crown the best in the world from an arbitrary start date.

Filip Forsberg has the most goals since February 1st. Does that make him the best goalscorer in the world right now?
Jonathan Toews has the most points since February 1st does that make him the best player in the world right now?
Pacioretty has the most goals since December 1st... does that make him the best goalscorer in the world?
Evgeni Malkin has the highest point per game since December 1st... does that make him the best player in the world right now?

See how easy it is to use an arbitrary start date to spin a narrative?
You can easily say Marchand is having the best 2017 in the NHL. But you can't possibly be serious in trying to assert him as the best player in the world over a 2 month sample, because when you expand that sample to 3 months all the sudden he doesn't lead in any of those categories. And when you go to 4 months out he's barely in the top 5 in points and not in the top 5 of any of the other categories.
