The Preds Missing Pieces

Something I wrote over the weekend. Thought it should be covered with the trade deadline approaching although it's more about long term sustainability as an upper echelon team.

It's a nice way to summarize it, and seems to come back to....... as the team sits today, with what they've proven, we need a higher-level #2C. So, surely Poile knows that, right? and his bet on Ribs crapped out, but this year was the last year of that prayer anyway - so he has to have a plan that isn't relying on Fiala turning into Forsberg by next year, doesn't he?

Would there be any interest for JVR and/or Bozak?

If yes, what would be coming back?

I'd love to have JVR but we need centers not wingers. In any other situation, I'd jump all over him.

Bozak doesn't solve our problems down the middle as he wouldn't be an upgrade over anyone we have there.

So, no deal made around here, unfortunately.

I think we're missing an elite goalie. Rinne is clearly on the decline.

For a team that has a supposed "elite defense (We have an elite blueline, but not elite overall team defense in my honest opinion)", we don't really need an elite goalie. Saros is good and he's going to develop into a prime Rinne.

We have an elite blueline but we don't play a team defensive system at all as far as I can tell. Our centers rarely play defense so the defensemen are expected to win 2-3s.

Our best defensive forwards are:

Fisher
Jarnkrok
Forsberg
Neal? (And if it is Neal, my goodness our 2-way forward depth is not good).

Compare that to other Central divisional opponents:

St. Louis:

Berglund (Both he and Steen are superior to Fisher, and Backes is superior to Berglund).
Steen
Statsny (Statsny is better defensively than Jarnkrok).
Schwartz (Schwartz is weaker defensively than Jarnkrok, but slightly better than Forsberg)
Lehtera

Tarasenko is at least above average defensively.

Chicago:
Kruger
Toews
Hossa
Desjardins

Nothing needs to be said, the top 3 best defensive forwards are far superior than Fisher.

Winnipeg:
Wheeler
Little
Matthias
Perreault

Our defensive side from forwards is better than Winnipeg.

Dallas:
Benn
Eakins
Sharp

Yeah we easily outmatch Dallas with zero competition...

Colorado:
Soderberg
Landeskog
MacKinnon? (He plays PK, but he isn't particularly good defensively)

Again we win with zero competition...

Minnesota:
Koivu
Staal
Granlund
Haula
Hanzal
Coyle
Niederreiter

Yeah Minnesota has one of the best depth in the league when it comes to their forward's defense, our depth is a joke compared to theirs.

How can you say that for sure? We either need an elite defense or goalie (preferably both). Right now we have neither. I really don't get the hype with Subban...is it because he's more offensive than Weber? This team can't stop giving up goals it seems.

Problem is in many cases that isn't the Dmen's fault, several of our forwards just aren't playing smart D at all which just causes that many more problems for the Dmen.

Trotz would be having a coronary right now with these forwards.

Even more a team that allows 2.83gpg has neither a elite D or goalie. Be it shortcomings from the forwards defense or the blueliners themselves it all meshes into team defense. In the last 10 games the team has allowed 4 or more goals in 6 games more than 3 goals in 8 of the 10. If you go back to the 1st of Feb in 15 games they have allowed 4 or more 10 of the 15 games. In Jan during 14 games they only allowed 4 goals 3 times. A case can be made that more starts for Sarro's since Feb 1 has only hurt Rinnes game and has not improved the team results both goalies are failing now. Some feel better when Sarro's plays however the win loss column is where it counts and for 5 weeks now absent the 4 game win streak is has been a brutal stretch.

In the final 17 games the team is going to need 10 wins to get into the post season. This west coast trip is critical it is hard to imagine winning all three but it would make the path much easier. If they only win 1 they will need 9 wins in the last 14 and thats a tall order. The Kings game is HUGE.

Missing pieces?

1. Strong mentality

2. Defensive structure, it's non-existent.

They need another pure skilled forward. I'm hoping Fiala can turn it up a notch or two and drive offense.

Two would be ideal from what I researched.

We are allowing way too many initial shots as of late (And both goalies seem to allow the initial shot in as well), which is why we've conceded so many goals as of late.
