Does this mean bye bye Hightower or Butler? Or both?

Since the Pats offered Butler a first round tender, if he goes, at least we get decent compensation. That said, I'd prefer to see him stay.

I think they're still trying to bring Butler back and that Gilmore coming here is more of a replacement for Logan Ryan since he's expected to leave via free agency.

That's actually a really interesting trade. Not sure I'd do it if I were the Pats.....unless there are more pieces involved.

I like Cooks a lot, but I wouldn't do that.

Gilmore vs Ryan is essentially a wash for me. So if you get rid of Butler, you're top 3 options are Gilmore, Rowe, Coleman/Jones? No thanks.

I'm pretty sure you can take any CB in the league (including Pro Bowlers) and find a clip of them getting burned. Particularly when they were expecting safety help.

As he appeared to be looking back for at the end of that play in the post above

Reports are that there has been no progress on extension talks with Butler.

If Butler wants more than Ryan, maybe the Pats deal Malcolm and bring Logan back?

Of course he wants more than Ryan, and he should, he's a superior player.
That being said, Ryan isn't worth the 10+ a year cap hit he's likely going to command. Good player, but not a great one.

I definitely was selling Gilmore short, he's better than Ryan, but Butler is a top 10, maybe top 5 corner in the league.

"You'll remember Butler from getting his ankles broken by Taylor Gabriel"?

Alternate Pro Bowler in Buffalo, I think he'll do alright with us if he can buy into the mentality. I'll wait to comment on what the plan is with Butler when it materialises, but keeping him is obviously preferable even to landing Cooks.

Yes

Butler is a heck of a CB. He's a great story and a football warrior

I'm probably the only one happy about Duron Harmon coming back

I really have a tough time believing that Butler for Cooks story. It's the epitome of everything the Pats are normally against, and really doesn't make much sense for them. Cooks is going to get huge deal with his production over the last few seasons, and he's ultimately a bit redundant in our offense. Unless they're turning around and flipping him or one of our other WRs, I just don't see the value in letting a core piece of the team leave to make it happen.

And if they are having trouble signing Butler and want/need to trade him, there just have to be better pieces that fit actual positions of need that a team would give up for a guy like him.

You're not supposed to get better after winning a SB but somehow Bill does it again.

Please re-sign Hightower. Rumor is Harmon is close to a deal to return as well.

Question, I did not watch quite a lot of Pats games last season due to my increased distaste for the NFL and being busy, but how many times was Butler covering the other team's number one receiver? In the games I did watch or listen to, I feel like Ryan was the one assigned that job. That's not to dismiss Butler's talent because he does have it, but I wonder how much that plays into his future as a Patriot if that is the case. Can anyone chime in? Much appreciated.

Butler traditionally only covers the smaller #1 WR's like Antonio Brown. Other than that, they generally let Butler take the #2 WR all on his own, and then use Ryan to cover the #1 and give him safety help.

edit - it might factor in a bit, but I don't think that approach is all that much an indictment on Butler's skills. I think they just have the confidence in him to completely take out the #2, so double-teaming the #1 becomes easier and more logical. They could probably get away with doing it with a lesser CB, but it definitely wouldn't work as well.
