Wild considering dealing for a "bonafide number 1 goalie"?

http://www.startribune.com/1330/story/227739.html

"here's also one other interesting scenario.

Since there's no guarantee the Wild will be able to re-sign Fernandez after the season, Risebrough said he's considering acquiring a bona fide No. 1 goalie to add to the roster to act as an insurance policy.

"But I've got to realistic," he said. "The acquisition of a goaltender would be fairly costly by the deadline. It doesn't mean you don't do it, though."

Jose Theodore, come on down!!!

Theo isn't an upgrade from Manny. They'd be much, much better served to give him whatever he wants to keep him.

Well if the lower limit is going up next season, the Wild will certainly have to add payroll. That's one way to do it.

Conklin is a great goalie, he won best goalie at the world cup. I'll tell you what, you give us O'Sullivan and Fernandez and I will let you have the best tender in the WC.

Best goalie at the World Championships (in 2004), not the World Cup. There is a huge difference.

Esche is pretty much worthless at this point. Maybe a mid-prospect and a 2nd or 3rd right now.

Unless I missed something the Wild have

a) 2 #1 goalies already
b) Much bigger fish to fry as far as aquisitions go

Doug R. isn't going to find a #1 for under a million dollars, so I'm guessing he'll stick with what he has.

Unless Riesbrough doesn't think that he can resign either of his 2 goalies he should be focusing on upgrading a very lackluster team, not on getting a 3rd #1 goalie "just in case."

I'm at a loss myself. It's not as if they're anywhere near the cap figure. Fernandez is a known quantity for them and at 32 years, he's still a viable commodity.

I'm puzzled that they wouldn't work out a deal with him and try to trade Roloson, or hold onto Dwayne and just let him walk at season's end. They need scoring. Again, they have a lot to spend, so I really can't figure it out.

Whew, that whole number 1 goalie thing was worrying me. Glad to see he's checking into it and not trying to pick up someone who can take a hockey puck and get it past the goalie and into the net using his hockey stick. That'd be foolish on his part

Oh, I disagree. In the case of the Wild, I'd have to scratch my head because 1) I have fleas and I'm always scratching, and 2) they have money to invest, as we've all stated already. But in the case of many other teams, Esche - if he were available - would be a great option because he doesn't financially handcuff an organization.

However, this summer, when the Fernandezes and Luongos of the world are looking for big multi-year contracts, Robert Esche is going to be available at $1M. That's a pretty good bargain, and if you can spend that on him instead of investing long term in someone who might be better but is a poorer value, you can also help your team at other positions. I think Clarke can use him in a package to move up in the draft, or to get forward/defensive help as he did a few years ago when he acquired Handzus and Esche for Boucher. A lot of GMs will be interested. I know I would. I base this on the idea that Niittymaki will be as ready as a goaltender can get next summer to be the undisputed starter in Philly, which I don't think is much of a secret at all.

I don't think the Flyers are going to trade Esche this season. Let's just write that it would be a major surprise to see Clarke rest all the weight of a playoff run on the shoulders of a rookie, albeit a well-groomed 25-year-old rookie. But again, financial flexibility is a commodity, and Esche's contract does nothing to hurt a team's financial flexibility.

Edit: Sorry, guys. Forgot that this is a Wild goaltending thread!
