ESPN to experience massive layoffs of on air talent

http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/es...icle-1.2989757

Quote:
SI.com reported Monday that the network will face a major round of layoffs between now and June as part a “significant cost-cutting” measure aimed at clearing tens of millions of dollars in salary from its payroll. The emphasis will be on forward-facing personalities — those who are present on TV, audio and digitial platforms — and people nearing the end of their contracts will be vulnerable, SI reported.

I didn't think they had much left to cut. I despise ESPN so I could care less.

Great news! Hope it shows people are sick of politics being shoved down their throats during their sports programming. Also it would be nice if they discovered there are other sports besides basketball and football.

I can't name 2 ESPN announcers.

I know what a few of them look like, but that's about it.

This is what happens when you pay a few loudmouths millions of dollars and "embrace debate."

That's a big part of the problem - too much coin locked into those rights.

The ESPN/Turner NBA deal is atrocious.

It's really sad. There was a time when I could turn on ESPN and watch all day. Now, outside of live sports it is pretty much completely unwatchable for me

I hope the NHL network or NBC picks up Bucci and Melrose. The only thing I can watch on ESPN is 30 for 30.

I downgraded my DirecTV to 50 or so channels for $29.99 three years ago. Thought I would miss it....even though I was getting sick of the on air "personalities even then....don't miss it at all. Couldn't even tell you who is on Sports Center or even if its still on.

In and of itself, it's not an awful strategy to focus on only the sports you carry. NBCSN does this with all of their sports and barely acknowledges baseball and basketball.

However, they also treat their viewers and the sports they cover with respect. I can only imagine how ESPN would cover the Premier League. It would likely be the equivalent of putting ketchup on a $100 steak.

How many years will it take for these cable TV giants to be slain and we can get all of our entertainment content through a web-based service?

That's the thing...nobody would take ESPN seriously if they started talking about the Premier League. It would be a joke. This is why ESPN spends so much time with football and basketball, because they not only have some of the best experts in the business but they actually give a crap about the sport. I really feel bad for Melrose and the hockey guys there because nobody takes them seriously strictly based on where they work. Would you take news ESPN broke in the hockey world over TSN? No probably not...you'd wait for TSN to confirm it.

Money talks to...is been mentioned in another post but the ESPN/NBA deal is asinine. Also they have a ton of money in football so they're hands are kind of tied

NBC has local deals in the NHL in Philly. DC. Chicago and the Bay Area.

NBA all of the above plus Boston and Portland.

Not terribly long but that wouldn't change the need for content. Going from Cable to streaming only changes the delivery vehicle.

The spread of tv content from networks to cable channels to cable providers to amazon
has actually increased the need for content and increased the opportunity for talent to work.

The NHL will certainly continue to present game broadcasts on a national basis with a national level production of product and will continue to make the local product available on a national basis.

ESPN will very likely return more to its roots and present more games of all kinds and do less news style shows. Each sport now has its own sportscenter style show which is killing the need for sports news on ESPN. They can still provide games

They will probably get rid of agong female anchors and reporters like Chris McKendry and Linda Cohn. Then again, that has age discrimination lawsuit written all over it.

While I'll never be happy about someone losing their job,I'm not unhappy to see ESPN failing. I used to watch ESPN everyday for hours,I haven't watched in probably a decade since they embraced troll journalism.

ESPN wouldn't need to make all these layoffs if they didn't turn into a joke and instead, kept their focus on sports. I hate ESPN with a passion.

Melrose is terrible. Bucci isn't that good either.

And its parent company, Disney? The movies and parks are paying the difference on the bottom line.

Melrose is occasional guest on SXM shows. Buccigross has been doing some NCAA hockey pxp.

What about Linda Cohn? Might she be targeted in layoffs as well?

Colin Cowherd has been saying this will happen for months. I wonder how many more ESPN guys are destined for Fox.
