They are the next Colorado. Will come crashing down and be a league wide embarrassment over the next few years.

Leafs getting close to make the playoffs : "Are the Leafs the new Hawks?"

Leafs missing playoffs : "Are the Leafs the new Oilers?"

Typical HFBoards overreaction. Can we wait before comparing the Leafs to a dynasty franchise or to a failing franchise (before McDavid)? Why can't the Leafs just be... the Leafs?

You need a Crawford too- 2010 team was good enough to out play Niemi's mistakes but there were times in '13, '14 and '15 the Hawks were facing a firing squad and Crow stood tall regardless of how much everyone likes to **** on him.

Crawford is good but not elite. Same as Andersen.
Niemi was one of the worst goalies on a cup team ever.

I feel confidant having the best management group over the worst.

The blackhawks are actually the new blackhawks. Schmaltz/debrincat = the new toews/kane. Keith = the new keith as he is ageless.

I think one of Neilson/Dermot will be very good on D for the Leafs.

That will be a valid argument as soon as you guys acquire Crosby and Malkin.

Matthews/Marner/Nylander are a fantastic young core of forwards.

And the comment was about every cup contender, not just the Pens.

Playoffs are going to be particularly painful for you with those expectations.

There are a lot of similarities for sure, but I think OP misses a very important factor. When you talk about being the new Hawks, people connect that with the powerhouse team they became, not the promising team they were. Leafs have a couple of big steps to take very quickly before we can talk about them even being capable of doing what the Hawks did.

You have to go back to 09 to find one that didn't have an established top 10ish number one defenseman. Let's not act like the leafs have a Kris letang either. Leaf fans seem to think it's just going to fall into their lap. There's always the possibility it could happen but the chances are very very slim. The leafs have a helluva lot of work to do to turn that team from playoff contender to actual contender.

Leafs are incredible upfront and will only get better. I can surely see the comparison to Chicago

The backend however... needs serious help and the organization knows that. That will be number 1 on the agenda in the offseason

Morgan Reilly is a stud. He is being laughably underrated on here. The Leafs have their guy. Once he gets his PP time he'll have 50+ points. Should occur next season.

He's being underrated because people don't think he is a #1, 50+ pt defenceman?

You definitely got the Leaf Fever alright. Gets lots of rest and fluids.

I think the comparison is fine, I don't find it insulting or anything but I do think Leaf fans should take it as it comes instead of shooting for the moon with expectations.

I love in this thread how fans who last year laughed and said the Leafs would not sniff the playoffs for 5 + years are now laughing again saying the Leafs don't have much of a future.

Leafs are the closest to the Hawks model. That brilliant Kadri deal was a Chicago like move.

Poor haters. Never quite able to judge the Leafs because they hate them o.

He doesn't even look like a #1 D this year, so I'd probably hold off on that until he actually starts to get close..

You're right, he has the look of a 2D at age 22/23.

The guy has so much talent. People don't get the top 5 toughest minutes in the NHl he's playing or the fact he gets little PP time to pad his stats. The elite skill is there.

Hmmm - I'm pre-disposed to getting grumpy over Hawks comparisons, but the Leafs are the team I like most after the Hawks.

What I'd say is I don't see the Leafs having the d-core the Hawks had as of right now.

Keep in mind things can turn around fast...Hawks went from drafting Kane 1OA (although they weren't last in the league that season, they won the lottery) to winning the cup in 3 seasons - and after they got to the WCF in '09 (2 yrs post-Kane) that got them Hossa (yes, I realize Hossa doesn't play defense - but my point is that when you get 'close' it's much easier to attract top talent).

The Leafs have exceeded expectations with their youngest forwards this season (even though Marner and Matthews were always great it's hard to ignore they've done even better than expected) - they will need to slog through next season and keep it up - but imo there's nothing about either that suggests it's some fluke season.
