This exists?? Like, they were in the same room together? That's amazing. I'll have to search for this after reading.
Yeah it exists. Kind of boring but still worth a watch. It used to be on YT I believe.

Yeah the legend of the turtle is a bit misleading. I mean yeah, he did duck and cover. But he was also unconscious for a few seconds and didn't know where he was.

In fact I think it was another Player's Tribune where I first read that, written by McCarty.

I don't know how to do the youtube thingy but here

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PQUHg_fPRto

McCarty said he regretted shaking his hand after the interview. I found the whole thing pretty awkward.

They've done a couple dual signing events together here in MI, I believe I've seen 2 in recent years. They have posters of the fight and both sign it for a combined price. There's no major animosity anymore, they say, but they don't go out to dinner afterward.

Now that I think of it, I am going to get one the next time.

That was an interesting interview imo--faxed death threats? Crazy.

Thought it was nice that even Claude could recognize McCarty's role and how much the game has changed for guys like them since then.

I can't do it. It feels wrong and dirty. If McCarty didn't have all the issues he has he wouldn't be doing it. Can't stand to see him shill for a dollar. I won't watch anything with those two together. I hate Claude's stupid face as much today as I did then.

Yeah, it's interesting to see their take and their perspectives. I found it on YouTube but I don't know how to link it because I keep getting redirected to the app.

Sorry for posting the "It's Happening" gif earlier- I was excited at the prospect of reading this...

I remember watching Drapes buzzing all over the rink as a 67 when I was but a lad, so he'll always be thought of fondly.

Just to be consistent, since I pick on other articles for spelling; the word "unscatched" is a silly sounding typo. I'm sure they meant "unscathed".

Pickiness aside, I loved that article!

I don't think the McCarty punch itself should be "celebrated", because he did sucker him and did knee him in the face when the two were being restrained by the refs, but the two are not really related other than the fact both involved sucker punches.

I love the responses in this thread. Kinda shows you just how much that rivalry meant.

It's weird that we celebrate this, but give Bertuzzi **** for doing the same.
Even before the Draper hit, Claude was perhaps the most hated man in hockey. A top tier rat, renowned for cheap shots, dirty play, and hiding behind refs. A career ending injury for him would have been cosmic karma.

I remember a picture of a homeless man in Toronto from the early 90s holding a sign that said "will fight Claude Lemiuex for money". He was a complete POS. Who was the Avs defenceman that he laid into in the dressing room so hard that he made him cry and he was traded a few days later? I've got Brent Severyn in my head, but I could be wrong.

Most intense rivalry I've ever seen in my 27 years of watching sports

Glad I was old enough to remember it

McCarthy would probably have his number retired right then and there

I still have game 7 of the 96-97 cup finals on VHS. Best time in my life of being a hockey fan. I still remember having to go to bed and not wanting to miss the action so I tuned into the radio while me and my step brother listened all night in our beds.

Man, I want to live in the alternate timeline where the 1997 Cup finals went 7 games.

Yes, 1997 was part of that boring stretch of Cup Finals (1995-99) that paled when compared to the earlier rounds

I miss those days. Two great teams! A lot of these guys played together for their respective countries at international tournaments.

Amazing read, that rivalry was a huge part of my childhood as an avid hockey fan, I watched that particular game from VHS probably 50 times. Great memories.
