Is this finally the year we get a Pittsburgh-Chicago Stanley Cup showdown?

For the last decade or so, outside of 2011 (Crosby/Malkin injuries) and 2015 (Pittsburgh was such a mess under Mike Johnston), this was always bandied about as a Stanley Cup Finals possibility, but has never come to fruition.

Given how close both teams are to the top of the standings and potential home-ice advantage for the playoffs combined with their playoff pedigree, could this be the year they finally meet up for Lord Stanley's Cup?

You may be surprised to discover that the players on each team in '92 were different from the ones playing now.

At the rate the Pens D are dropping like flies (forwards too) the likelihood of them making it out of the wood-chipper that is the Metro is unlikely.

Uhhh ... Hawks have been on a nice roll lately but things change quickly over a matter of only 2 or 3 games (just ask Wild fans who are gathering on the nearest ledge even as we speak). The Hawks would have to go through 3 of Minnesota, San Jose, St. Louis, Nashville, Anaheim and the two upstart teams from Alberta - a daunting task - before they even think about whichever powerhouse team emerges from the East.

So, cooling jets is the order of the day.

Dumb thread. Op need to read a dictionary, start with a simple word like finally.

And no it won't happen, pens are not good enough.

I hope not, that might be the series that I want to see the least.

Yeah this is silly. I would bet money that neither team makes the SCF, but anything can and will happen.

It's possible.

I hope not, though.

No, it's more likely to be the Hawks and some random eastern team they'll crush.

Yeah but that series was cancelled due to the hostage/bomb situation at the igloo and the ice being destroyed from a helicopter falling on it.

NHL will be turning into the NBA if this happens.

So much for "parity"

Doubtful. Too many moving parts in the hockey playoffs. While I do believe the winner of the Wild / Blackhawk series makes the Finals ... the East is a beast. It's up for grabs ... especially in the Metro. I truly believe the first wild card out of the Metro will run through the Atlantic.

For the good of everyone involved this probably shouldn't happen.

1. It won't end the "who's better" debate between Toews and Crosby. Chicago fans will go to their grave saying it's Toews despite the rest of the world knowing it's Sid.

2. The absolutely insufferable Jeremy Roenick would be impossible to sit through on the broadcasts. You got beat by a better team in 92 Jeremy, get over it, or don't, I don't really care but please shut up.

We feel like that in the East about the winner of the Pens/Caps series. I know there are a couple other very good teams in the East, but the Pens and Caps are in a league of their own and that series, regardless of when it's played, is the ECF.

See I don't trust the Caps, and no way the Penguins make it again. They'll get ousted in the 1st or 2nd round IMO.

It'll be someone random like CBJ or an Atlantic team like Ottawa/Montreal.

Look at all the random Stanley Cup final losers of late. Tampa? NJ Devils? Flyers in '10 (loved that squad, but random). Heck even Ottawa made one in the last 10 years or so didn't they?

No. Statistically a slim chance.

Eh the current standings say there's massive parity and it's the opposite of the NBA.
At the halfway point last season, Pittsburgh was old, slow and needed to blow it up. They went on to win the cup.
