Take notice, kids. This is how you fake an injury for the betterment of the team.

I'm pretty sure he didn't. He went to the end of the bench and just took 1 step back to the runway and was like a foot behind the bench smiling the whole time then immediately stepped back onto the bench after Dubinsky scored. I'm not 100% sure if he didn't miss a shift but I don't think so.

Fine.

But the next time a team gets awarded a penalty shot against Columbus I certainly am telling my team to have the player pull up lame for a minute and miraculously recover after the shot.

Yeah, there's no hard-fast rule so every team should do this vs them now when it comes up in the future. It's def one of those things I would use selectively and this was an odd sport for it. I don't really buy that Anderson actually needed to leave, he was standing on the bench just fine like normal without getting any attention until Torts told him to go stand in the runway for a minute.

Totally shocked Tortorella would do such a thing... he doesn't seem to be the type...

If you watch the play Anderson clearly is in pain and has trouble getting up. Sending Sam Gagner or Brandon Dubinsky is not sending some sniper out for the shot. Gagner is 0-2 on penalty shots and Dubinsky is not a goal scorer. The OP would have a legitimate complaint if Tortorella tried sending out Atkinson.

Surprised there wasn't a thread instantly when it happened. Since everyone loves to hate Torts. However, this time I will side with the majority and I think it was pretty bush league and cheap

You just know that Torts would complain about something like this if done against him.

I am pretty sure if Torts could pick his shooter, he would go with anyone but Dubinsky

This thread should be titled, "Tortorella Attepts to Prevent Jackets From Scoring on Penalty Shot." Anyone who watches the CBJ knows that Anderson is much more likely to score on a penalty shot than Dubinsky.

1M fine to the organization, take away their 1st and 4th round picks. Suspend Bobrovski 1/4 of the season for being generally aware

He tried to put in Gagner before Dubinsky.

I am sure Anderson WAS hurt, he missed 5 minutes. But I also think Torts tried to pull a fast one with Gagner.

That's what we'd expect from Pittsburgh anyway, so have at it! Anderson wasn't faking injury, but if I were a Devils fan, I'd be pissed at Torts and the league.

Could always just not commit a penalty to force a penalty shot, but that just seems like a stupid idea.

Now -- by the time they sorted out the mess about who WAS going to take it, he had probably shaken it off to the point where he was OK to take it, but I think once he's ruled out, he's ruled out.

Is it a little sketchy? Perhaps. I think, personally, there should be a rule -- if a player is unable to take his own penalty shot due to a legitimate injury situation (and you could have a similar rule about a player who's unable to stay on the ice after an icing), he should be ineligible to play for -- I don't know, pick a length of time. Two minutes, five minutes, the rest of the period, whatever. Just to prevent shenanigans.

Why didn't he go in the locker room then? He was standing in the tunnel hiding. The moment he chose to leave and the moment he chose to come back are suspicious

It doesn't really matter though. Most teams only have a couple players that are actually good at penalty shots and everyone else is just throwing stuff to see what sticks.

It certainly didn't matter in this game.

Wait, you think Dubinsky is that much better than Anderson in a breakaway, that this would even be necessary? Anderson can snipe.

That and if you watch the play, Anderson obviously had trouble getting of the ice, and walking the tunnel is exactly what one would do if one had a minor leg injury.

There is nothing here, sorry folks.

Hiding in plain sight.

Maybe I'm one of the few posters that still plays but if you get a minor injury you'll want to

1. Get up and walk a bit, test it out.

2. Take a shift or two off.

Both of which he did.
