Why aren't the Jets better than they are?

Looking at their roster I think it looks good on paper, but what is keeping them from being a top 8 team in the Western Conference?? Coaching? Goaltending? Combination?

We are still too young.

We need a proven veteran goalie.

We need a coach who has won Stanley Cups.

Because they are all hype and zero substance. That isn't a top 8 roster in the west. Byfuglien is a winger being paraded as a #1D. Laine is one dimensional. Scheifele is carried by his linemates. Trouba is dumb as a brick. Morrissey is all pedigree. Little is a 3C. Ehlers is one dimensional. They have no bottom six forwards.

Wheeler is really good though.

They play with little to no structure and I don't think it's the coach.

the lack of depth on defense has hurt this team.

Bad coaching, bad goaltending, and Byfuglien is overrated.

IMO Maurice is the main culprit.

The other big reason is that while Jets in theory have a decent defense corps, some of the better Ds seem to always be missing games.

Morrissey-Buff
Enström-Trouba
Chiarot-Myers

would actually be a rather good defensive unit. But I don't think they had that together for a single game this season.

It all comes down to the Goalies. Simply not good enough

It comes down to goaltending. They need a goalie that can put confidence in the rest of the team. Look at yesterday's game as the latest example. A team that can blow a 4-0 lead is a fragile team.

They need better goaltending desperately. Should have tried to trade for MAF (although maybe they did and MAF wouldn't waive).

Because Jets fans have created this perception that they are absolutely on the cusp of greatness with their sure-fire star prospects. Fans in turn expect wins. In reality the team is just really bad.

I think we may be seeing another Oilers-lite here.

They strike me as one of the two teams that need a coaching change the most, them and Buffalo.

If they can find a good coach I think they'll make the next step and become a playoff team.

2 things this year from my POV:

-Injuries

-Proven Goaltender

At this point, I wouldn't be surprised if Chevy and Maurice get fired. They need a new direction IMO.

It's been strongly suggested by those in the know that Winnipeg is on pretty much every single players "no trade" list.

wow is this bad. Byfuglien is certainly a legitimate #1 D, not simply being "paraded" as one. Laine is 18 years old. Pardon him for not being fully developed on the defensive side of the puck yet... Scheifele is 100% not being carried by his linemates. Ehlers (also still very young) puts in a large amount of defensive effort for the most part and with continued hard work, he too will be rewarded and no longer be this "one-dimensional" player you speak of.

I look at the Jets and I see Columbus. For the last 2 seasons I always thought the Blue Jackets had good talent but they did not win enough. The Jets have good talent but do not win consistently enough. Now the Jackets did hire Tortorella as coach so it could be coaching? Sometimes it just takes time for a team to jell and start winning together.
