I heard the interview. It kind of shocking that this quote went pretty much completely ignored by most of the media for three days.

Probably because it has become such an empty threat nowadays.

The city is going to cave sooner or later. Sad that they need taxpayer money to get this done. Oilers threatened and got their way as well.

Is there any team in the league that has built their rink without taxpayer money? I'd love to know the list.

Sooner or later a NHL team was going to go all NFL...with all the recent moves and threatening moves regarding new stadiums it was just a matter of time before a NHL team played that card.

Cue Bettman and Daly statements on how no teams will move, dedication to the market etc....

Surprised he would play the card this early.

I've always thought the arena and stadium plans would coincide with an Olympic bid, hasn't be decided either way so as long as that's a possibility, so is the arena.

If the Flames are vulnerable to as move with an older building then so are most of the teams in this league. Next year, many of the arena built in the 90's boom will hit a quarter century in age and are not getting any younger.

This league will have a number of hot potatoes on their hand next decade, not like they have enough fires already.

Ken King is a complete ding-dong.

He's the Flames version of Gary Bettman. Bloodsucking lawyer/politician.

He basically saying a $400 million dollar arena in Victoria park (by the University) is no good. He wants a billion dollar facility... or else.

Want to spend hundreds of millions of dollars to move your team from a top 10 hockey market to some place like Seattle so you can lose millions of dollars every year? Ok . Be our guest ya big *********.

considering the players get 50% of all revenues generated by the new building... and a new building wouldn't be necessary if the players weren't collecting 70 million dollars...

and how players making 70 million could probably chip in for a new building that they benefit from easier than tax payers could...

I say the line has to get drawn... teams need to be told no. I mean everyone benefits from a new park,.,, better police... better roads... heck even a big strip club will draw some tourists and economic development

tax dollars don't need to be going to these unnecessary arenas.

the only logic that they need a building... is that everyone else has one... but why? why does everyone else have one? this logic is circular reasoning

if the league can afford 70 million dollar payrolls they can also afford to build their own arena. Walmart builds its own building... mom and pop build their own building... if theres enough money to support a business, let it survive on its own

Its a shame that something that costs so much is never built to last

"Earlier this week, Mayor Naheed Nenshi said the proposed CalgaryNEXT project in the West Village — which includes an arena, stadium and fieldhouse — is dead. [Flames CEO Ken] King disagreed, saying the project is "resting." "

The most popular arena/stadium built privately was the Staples Center. There are also a few soccer stadiums built privately.

Typical stuff. Empty threats, but eventually the city will give money, happens everytime.

Yeah I can't imagine MLSE asking for money to build a rink, they make enough money, especially now that they are owned by Bell/Rogers. Hopefully when the time comes to make another rink, taxpayers aren't footing the bill.

Pretty much. With a market like Calgary I doubt you're going to get anyone to raise an eyebrow until things become nuclear because empty threats are all part of the process.

I really hope Calgary doesn't become the next city that gets bent over by a rich owner looking for a new toy. Taxpayer funding for private venues is never a good idea. But threatening relocation must be on page one of the owners manual when these rich guys get their teams. Pull at those emotions....Get half a billion dollars.

It depends how bad the economy gets in Calgary if it takes even worse dive as some think the city might see this as a make work project.
