Well, we've lost Ovechkin and quite possible Kuznetsov and Orlov for three weeks in 2018

It's going to be a disaster for the entire NHL, not just the Capitals. Plenty of other players are going to play for their national teams I would imagine despite the wishes of their owners.

I doubt the North Americans will do it though. Olympics aren't nearly as important than the Stanley Cup for that continent.

Doesn't matter. We'll be rebuilding and all our stars will be gone by then anyway.

Last chance to accomplish his dream. I'm 99% sure he's going.

I think for the Olympics they should do a U20 kind of thing. Outcome is way more unpredictable and therefore way more fun!

Is there a reason the NHL had to announce this right before the playoffs??

Ovechkin is not in a good position right now.

If he goes, haters will say, look, he let down his team, not a good captain
If he stays, haters will say, look at him, blah blah blah through those years for nothing.

Hope he'll go (and will be the only capitals to go), if it's just a $$$ penalty, Leonsis don't have to worry. I'm sure, russians oligarchs will pay the penalty and even give some $$$ as present to Ted.
But my concern is that the NHL will get their revenge via refs.

It's like 17 days, he'll miss what? Maximum 10 games. I think our record is pretty good without Ovi in the lineup.

If Ovie wins the Cup this year, he's 100% going. All that would be left for him to achieve in his career would be Olympic Gold. That said, I fully support whatever decision these guys choose to make. I would laugh in someone's face if they told me I wasn't allowed to represent my country.

yea....the way ive been hearing it they had a deadline which ran well into the playoffs.

So, it was either announce it now or inside the playoffs.

Hell you could argue that NOT winning the Cup would make him want a medal even more. Like 2010.

I don't mind Ovi going. The regular season is too long anyway, he's not gonna miss much, the Caps usually breeze through regular season games in February. We can get a playoff spot without him.

The Olympics should be for amateurs, anyway. So, U20 would work fine.

I'd support that.

It's funny how much people on the mains are complaining about this, yet most of the time people seem to badmouth the Olympics compared to other international hockey tournaments.

I'm still skeptical, tbh. Plenty of time to work a deal out. Feels like a negotiating tactic to me, though could be I'm being too optimistic.

I don't care what he does on this subject. Whatever he wants is fine with me. I doubt fans will begrudge him that. I think they would also reward him should he not go.

now...if 19, 90, 77, 74, 70, 9, 92 all want to go too....I don't know how that works

Karlsson back for Ottawa. White & Svechnikov making their NHL debuts.

My guess is the NHL wants NHLPA concessions to break toward going. The players will balk and some may go anyway. Reading between the lines it sounds like the league may threaten additional suspension to those that go (as things stand).

Why? It completely ruins its global appeal. It's the problem with football in the Summer Olympics. The U23 rule completely neuters any interest in the sport globally. An U20 rule for hockey would just appeal to Canadians on the whole and that's it.
