Not really. I practically never trade and never sign FAs, and you still end up with powerhouse teams as long as you draft somewhat decently and manage to re-sign your homegrown talents.

I don't know why it's so easy, i should be failing with the team i have. I even try and change tactics every now and then to see if anything changes, i basically have two AHL-goalies, a decent NHL-defense, 1.5 lines of NHL-forwards that suddenly has turned into top-scorers and then the rest are AHL-caliber and just prospects.

I don't get how i can reach the playoffs.

But sometimes you have a good team, but they cant make it to playoffs. It happens, but not so oft like your example.

Same problem here. Played with the Leafs and tried to play the youth but still trade away all the old dead meat for picks. Still managed to ice the rookie line Kadri JVR with gardiner and rielly, the rest was basically given away for 3-7th round picks. JVR won the art ross with the same points as Marner (118) and i had a 60-65 wins season.

Basically won the Stanley cup and presidents trophy with the following bottom six

Carrick-Marincin
Dermott-Nielsen

Kapanen-Hyman-Timashov
D'amigo(FA sign)-Froese-Greening

Do those old, glitch barrage offensive tactics still work in this game...?

Man, I just did the most amazing thing ever, drafting during the draft.

At the start of the 2016-17 season, I traded players to stock up on draft picks. I ended up with 5 first rounders in 2018. After the draft lottery, I had possession of picks 1 and 3.

Used no 1 on Rasmus Dahlin, and when it was time to pick with no 3, I traded down, several times

- 3rd overall for 4th overall + 29th overall
- 4th overall for 5th overall + 2nd rouder
- 5th overall for 6th overall + 2nd rouder
- 6th overall for 7th overall + 2nd rouder
- 7th overall for 8th overall + 2nd rouder

I used the 8th to draft Jere Mehtala and the 2nd rounders on several prospects. I turned a 3rd overall into a 7th overall, 29th overall and four 2nd round picks

Can confirm that yes, yes they do. And with a bit of tweaking, they work really, really well.

I've always used the Slapshot tactic I think it's called, however I'm looking for some other, more realistic tactics if anyone would like to share. Want to start a new sim but the ole cheap tactic makes the game way too easy.

See, I play nothing but defense really and I'm always tinkering...

Using a tactic that you know wins really, really defeats the purpose of playing a game...but maybe I'm just old school...

Well, what temporarily made me stop playing* was when I realized that I still won at a similar pace after I had released (terminated contract) pretty much the entire team and used juniors to fill up the slots. Totally defeats immersion that a team made of 16-19 aged youngsters goes on a ~five game win streak. Ok, so the SWE-2 is bad, but not that bad!

* (believe me, I will get stuck playing again, but right now I'm back on the wagon ;-) )

I have to admit I don't find this game so easy as many of you here are mentioning, nor I can rob AI in trades.

At least many of you guys can play. I'm finding the same issue where it crashes when the game updates itself in July. I'm not sure if it is because my database is so huge? I always have extra players and staff on.

That's just abusing game mechanics though. Playing that way kinda kills the fun of building a team from the ground up, in my opinion. To each his own.

Don't even use it.

Have even tried either really defensive tactic or really offensive tactic. It's impossible to really fail.

I could have gone on and on, but I thought it was fun haha. Unfortunately, most of those 2nd rounders are busts

I haven't updated the chart in two years or so, but I have a list of all draft pick for draft pick trades for about a decade and fairly accurate "score card" for their respective values (like the NFL has).

Top 5 picks are almost never moved, period. So I didn't bother including them in the scoring reasonably, as it's a waste and throws off the rest of the scale...

Real NHL instances:
5 for 7, 62, future 2nd
7 for 9, 40
8 for 12, 49, 207
9 for 13, 44
12 for 13, future 3rd

Seem to remotely relevant to this. So while he did do better than he should have...it's not obscene...those should have been thirds for the most part, pending the caliber of player available.

This post isn't really relevant at all, but I knew I had some data some place and using it justifies ever having sat down and hashing out...

Yeah, I've done it too. Bottom line, as long as you have 4 or 5 picks in the top 100 every year, your farm team will be overflowing with talent in no time.

I don't. I don't interact with any of the coaching/micro-managing features. Strictly GM.

I think for the challenge that's the way to go. I could just never bring myself to do that when playing as GM of the Penguins because the coach will always treat Malkin's line as a 2nd line, and he scores maybe 40-50 points per year. Kills the realism for me because he plays just as much as Sid and is consistently as productive in real life.

With any other team though, it's much easier.

Yeah, there's that kind of bias where you can't seem to have two lines rolling at the same time. I haven't played as PIttsburgh, but it's true that it's always either Crosby and Malkin scoring at a crazy pace while the other that finds himself on the 2nd line usually has mediocre stats. Kessel often ends up winning scoring titles in my sims playing with Crosby.

I did try to manage tactics and lines, but I like to sim my game fairly fast and it just became too much of an hassle. I used to take control of my AHL team as well, but decided not to eventually.

The trading shuts down every year in February, so you can't make any trades until a few days after the finals, which is usually around that date the first week of June.
