BRILLIANT!

Should be easy to build a 20 mile monorail from somewhere downtown, near an existing light rail station!

Did you mean to say Barroway (or insert other name) and company? Seems Tony has taken an extended leave of absence or has been spending the last few months preparing to break radio silence with an inspirational speech designed to motivate the masses to believe in their new arena concepts. Indeed, Tony proclaimed months ago that he would not say anything until the conclusion of the season. Well, Saturday night is as good as any to set his next deadline-what might that one entail?

That's definitely a legitimate transportation issue - should pass easily out of Gump Worsley's committee! Wouldn't even need a Strike Everything switcheroo!

Force of habit writing LeBlanc and company...

Yes, the silence/absence will likely be broken once the State Legislature session ends next week and the nearly dead bill...dies from lack of support...

Bickley: It's time to say 'thank you' to Shane Doan

To quote:

"After 21 years of unparalleled service, Shane Doan could be down to his final game as captain of the Arizona Coyotes.

Cheer like you’ll never see him again.

His unshakable faith in the organization has been tested like never before.

It’s possible that Doan would like to finish his career on a better note. Maybe he’s tempted to try his hand with another organization, when it wouldn’t appear like he was chasing a Stanley Cup at the trade deadline. But that is highly unlikely, and in all probability, he just needs time to reconcile the finality of a career that has spanned two decades, two countries and zero Stanley Cup titles."

Yeah, all NHL teams will be required to clear their Reebok gear before they get new Adidas inventory, but that's not relevant to the thread, is it?

"The Arizona Coyotes are a professional hockey team that no one really wants, but taxpayers in Arizona might be forced to subsidize a third new stadium in less than 20 years as the National Hockey League chases the mirage of economic success in the southwest."

Nothing will be forced on the taxpayers...this bill is dead...

From the article, this paragraph sums it up...

""Independent economic research has typically not found that new hockey areas generate sufficient tax revenue to cover the cost of construction," [College of the Holy Cross Sports Economist Victor] Matheson told Reason this week. "Of course, even if it did, the question be why is it fair for an NHL team to direct its tax obligations towards its own facility while other businesses have to pay taxes that go to statewide governmental needs.""

b) new marketing? Not a huge believer in traditional marketing, do a few billboards and such, but have a very talented creative and twisted social media types and market to the younger set, its all about building the pipe for the next 30 years. I would be controversial and outspoken, think like the lovechild of Mark Cuban and the Kings twitter account. I would hire Jeremy Roenick as a consultant for how to be a star player and make publicity work for you and your team. Take care of my season ticket holders, private entrances, refill cups, make sure everyone has a jersey in the lower bowl as part of the package and fans only section, no alcohol sections, and making sure that the home team is valued. Make it an unbelievable experience to be a fan, have players or coaches deliver tickets, have reasonably priced edible food.
wow. thanks for such detailed posts. it strikes me that both of you propose aggressive marketing. i agree, for sure, who wouldn't ... which is why its been puzzling that we didnt see that. it seems to some extent, they took sales for granted almost. big splash short term plus positive long term. the potential is there ... auston matthews. i also think a marketing plan that includes schools and kids is important - if even only for dumping unsold tix a week before a tuesday game.

the challenge about phoenix it seems is that while its probably more difficult to market the event/experience of buying tickets and attending a game compared to most locations (notwithstanding logistical issue like arena location, traffic, competing sports events), its probably even more difficult to market the experience of actually playing the game. this market needs focus on younger supporters and buyers.

Yeah seems to be a no brainer, yet ironically enough apparently the only people that didn't think of it were the only people who needed to think of it, your Arizona Coyotes braintrust.

The new stadium "will create a true win-win for the team, the state, and the community," wrote NHL commissioner Gary Bettman in*a letter to state lawmakers. "A victory that will generate new tax revenue capable of funding Arizona priorities like education and public safety."
Hmmm, Glendale's' arena is a perfect example of what kind of victory Arizona can look forward to ... Hell, Glendale's so-called victory resulted in near financial ruin with them eventually considering selling council chambers and or other such "non-essential" civic structures, closing libraries, laying off police, etc.

It's no wonder that Bettman has switched to extolling cash being made available for priorities such as education and public safety over past and much promoted economic growth around such sports venues.....

Nope...likely to adjourn the end of the week, April 14...

Some historical events which also happened on April 14...
  • President Abraham Lincoln is shot by John Wilkes Booth at Ford's Theater
  • RMS Titanic hits an iceberg
  • The worst sandstorm ravages US midwest, creating the "Dust Bowl"

You get the idea...

And if so then the arena funding bill will be 'officially' dead just like with their 3 -1 loss to Minny makes their season 'officaly' dead too.

Last NHL game in Arizona played this season. Perhaps unlikely but will this be the last one ever?

Watched the Coyotes-Wild tonight. What a class act Doan is, sorry to see him leave such a legacy of accomplishment behind. Imagine what his career would have looked like on a team that contended?

Bettman's claim of new money for the state in this arena deal is either a case of lying or ignorance. The legislative analyst for the Arizona legislature in an official report said that the bill would result in no net income for the state - in fact, in the last paragraph on page 1 of this document, he wrote that it could lose money.

https://apps.azleg.gov/BillStatus/GetDocumentPdf/448449

Axiom would know this and wouldn't have let Worsley and IA submit a bill where the state makes new tax money, as Bettman claims, because if a bill creates net revenue to the state, it kicks in a requirement that the bill pass with 2/3rd majorities, and we know this so-called "transportation" bill might not even have the support of 1/3 of the Senate and House.

Does Bettman know this, and is just lying? I don't know. But at a minimum, he was obviously popping off his mouth about something he knows nothing about. So since we assume at least some people with the NHL read this, will they get the word to Bettman and he issues a correction to the taxpayers of Arizona who he is duping with his claim that the arena will provide new money for education and other important needs of the state?

Get out the popcorn, because it'll be a long wait before Bettman would ever correct one of his lies/exaggerations.

In a way, the fact he never left to a contender, makes his accomplishments and loyalty an even bigger accomplishment.
