One of the odd things that happened as Washington fired G.M. Scot McCloughan this offseason was that Chris Cooley, a former Washington tight end who now works for the team and for a Dan Snyder-owned radio station, speculated on the air that McCloughan was drinking, and it was affecting his job. Even odder was that the team never responded to that allegation, and never acknowledged that it was inappropriate for Cooley to speculate like that.

But team president Bruce Allen tells the Washington Post that he told Cooley privately, with McCloughan present, that the comments were inappropriate.

So why didn’t Allen say so publicly? He says he just doesn’t have the time to shoot down everything said on the radio that isn’t correct.
It's never easy/simple in DC

He also answered questions about Mclou's job status and the stuff about the funeral etc. So yeah, weak excuse. I get that you can't return every ball that's lobbed over the net but that was a big one.

Cooley makes those comments and the organization says nothing, the story is, "Cooley was rude to say that," maybe followed by some speculation that no one at that time was going to corroborate.

If the organization says something, it's a can of worms. If GMSM was drinking in any capacity, denying it would have been a lie easily uncovered. Acknowledging it would have been a ****storm, and McCloughan most definitely didn't want that. Even ignoring it and just publicly admonishing Cooley would have made it more of a story -- not commenting directly on the truth of the rumor would have spurred the press on.

They were right to say nothing. Privately telling Cooley it was a dick move and moving on was the best course of action.

Anecdotal fan fury: There is a van I see in PG, specifically Greenbelt, fairly routinely. It's some 90s model with the bottom trim painted Redkins gold and the rest is burgundy. Whenever I saw it, it was coated with Redskins stickers.

I saw it on the Beltway tonight and all the Skins stickers have been removed. You can see the outlines still, but the owner tore them all off. Gee, wonder why?

The draft is this week? Man, I really haven't been paying attention to the NFL.

Don't worry, someone will post our 1st round pick in the game day thread (WR out of Kentucky Wesleyan)

Joking aside, I think we take a QB earlier than anyone expects, don't focus on the DL (instead go BPA pretending that we learned something from Scot), and also do not take a RB in an RB heavy draft (again, taking a page from Scot last year ignoring DL needs in a heavy draft).

We don't need Scot!

Maybe late. Heard a rumor on the radio today saying the Skins are pondering the 17th + Cousins for the 2nd overall.

Mitch T, come on down!

I get Smoot's logic, and mostly agree with it. I won't get into my thoughts on Kirk because I don't have the ****s to give to rehash that again, but I will say that you do not play this year with Kirk on the tag and risk going through this nonsense all over again or watching him leave for SF for nothing on Day 1 of free agency next year. Either give Kirk what he wants (they obviously know his contract demands by now) and sink/swim with him or trade him.

If we gave up a Pro Bowl QB plus our first to move up to #2 to take a project QB that is unlikely to rise to the level of the QB we'd be giving up to get him would dig up the coffin of this franchise to put a completely superfluous nail in it.

If there were ANY truth to that rumor, they'd damn sure better be doing it to grab one of the sure-fire defensive studsthat would be at their disposal.

I'd offer Kirk + #81 for #2 + #109. Leaves the Redskins with 2, 17, 49, 109, 114, 123, 154, 201, 209, 220, and 235. Maybe trade down from #2 and pick up another 2nd rounder or an additional first next year. With a draft allegedly allegedly as talented as this one we can solve a lot of holes. Let Colt take the reigns for this year and look to find your QB of the future next year when there are three guys who are projected to be top 10-15 picks as QBs.

I have no qualms with trading KC, since it seems there's less than 0% chance they're going to resign him. I am completely against the original suggestion that we do it to go up to 2 to take Trubisky.

With you 100% that we should build up as much draft capital as possible, and look for QB where it represents value, especially next year. #2 OA this year sure as heck doesn't represent a spot to find "QB value."

If we could get in position to grab one of Solomon, Allen or Adams, that would be tremendous. (I don't buy any of the rumblings that Allen could fall to us at 17 -- I'd be thrilled to be wrong on that, but I don't think I am.)

Take it back, take it back!

I actually wouldn't be disgusted with a Trubidky pick at 17, if there weren't a player with the right value there and we couldn't fjnd a trade partner to go back -- but of course there's no way he's not wearing a Browns hat well before then.

2 firsts, including the 2nd overall, or hold.

Maybe Allen gets canned in a year and our new GM pays him. If we sell a probowl QB under contract for a year + rights, we better get a hefty return.
