has he been asked / reported the meaning behind it ? it is a very well done tattoo, the shading and detail is amazing.

my stab at it, lions king of the jungle, lions wearing a crown, hes the king of kings.. or maybe he just loves the **** out of narnia, either way i approve.

From what Lou and Babcock have said recently, it looks like there isn't going to be a captain next season.

never understood this argument, if everyone already believes he will be the captain, why wait? you say no need to put pressure on him, but if Media/Fans/Management/players/coaches believe he is the future captain, then he will be treated as the captain anyways imo, so there's really no need to wait.

I believe they'll sign him to an extension next summer and name him captain when they announce it.

I'm not so sure on that. There is a difference between eventually being expected to shoulder a role and being told to shoulder that role right now.

Fans/Media will always have pressure on Matthews since he's the franchise all-star center. Still, there is a different kind of pressure of the guy who probably will be Captain and the guy who actually is. And if he's not wearing the C I doubt Babcock or the other players outright expect him to be shouldering too much in the dressing room.

Why rush it? When the time is right then he'll get the C.

i honestly think it's more of, they want Babcock to be the "captain" of the team for one more year, before it gets firmly put into Matthews hands.

Does anyone think Phaneuf would have been as reviled as he was if he had never been named captain?

I don't see how this poll is so close...Even if it isn't this summer, I think it's fairly clear that Auston is the next captain. At this point, even acquiring someone else who is a captain/veteran star might not change that.

There was more than just his captaincy that upset people, his salary was probably the biggest reason people disliked him. There's also little comparison between Phaneuf and Matthews, if that's what you're getting at. Matthews is a caliber of player that Dion couldn't dream of being, especially in his time in Toronto, and he's much better with the media for it. He also embraces the spotlight, whereas Dion was more reserved in front of cameras. The C is a big responsibility, but so is being the 1st overall pick of a franchise starving for a superstar, and he came in and had a historic rookie season under those conditions.

All my comment was suggesting is that there is *clearly* a great deal of pressure added to being the captain, which would be a reason not to give him the C right away. Some people think it doesn't matter when they announce it, I disagree.

Less money Phaneuf would have been appreciated say 4.5 million.

If the C has anything to do with leadership then the men up top dont give it. It is taken. Matthews seems like he will take it next. Doesnt matter when.

Apparently, Draisaitl is better than Matthews now, according to the mainboard.

Seriously, the main board are heavily composed of goons.

Draisaitl is pretty ****in awesome. He reminds me of Sundin. He'll never be a finisher like Matthews, but his complete game is great, and he's a very good offensive player. Today? He actually is probably better overall player than Matthews. But Matthews has 88GP under his belt, and Leon has 204.

Leafs/Oilers should be a legitimate rivalry from hereon out. Hopefully some SCF head-to-heads in the future.

It would be pretty sweet to have the Leafs and Oilers meet in the finals a few times. Bettman would probably blow a gasket but that's ok

My day is always more satisfying if my trip to HFBoards doesn't include a trip to the main forum. It's sometimes as bad as Facebook comments over there.

I'm confident that Matthews has the Calder locked up. Very much deserving, and exciting to have a Leaf win the award after years of trading away our picks and promising young players. A new era indeed.

Auston just got nominated for ''Best NHL player'' at the ESPYs.
The other nominees are: Sidney Crosby, McDavid, Bobrovsky, and Kane.
In other words the ESPYs believe Auston is at least top 5 NHL player.

He could get anywhere between 65-85 points next season depending on who Babcock puts on his wings; even having Brown over Hyman last year would have been good for an extra 10-15 points imo
