AUDIO: Fascinating interview with Gary Bettman on WFAN New York - 45 minutes non-stop

Bettman was in studio with Mike Francesa and it went far beyond the Islanders situation.

I have never heard Bettman this engaged in an interview because he knew Francesa would let him go where he wanted to go. This is a must listen.

45 minutes non-stop and he touched just about everything.

I have no clue on how he has survived in afternoon drive in NYC for 25+ years but he did. He certainly is not a moron as he knows what works in that market.

As Howard Stern has said for 30 years, he's embarrassed by the radio industry, he used to say being a radio personality on the food chain of the entertainment industry is somewhere around 'circus clown'.

Francesa succeeded because listeners like that he sounds like them, and that's got nothing to do with Francesa being savvy.

I wish Francesa had had a hockey centric producer whispering in his IFB to ask about Carolina, Phoenix and Quebec but again it was on New York radio.

Bettman does what the BOG wants and Jacobs is still the chairman.

I have thought for the longest time that the NHL has hung on to Arizona longer than they should have because of Jacobs history in the state. To be fair Jeremy Jacobs has tried to distance himself from the way his father did business but there were loose ends in the 70's.

Hockey in the New York radio market barely moves the needle. Nobody cares about hockey. It ranks just above NASCAR in terms of visibility and importance.

Am curious for history's sake what you mean by "there were loose ends in the 70s."

Yeah people badly overestimate how popular hockey is in NYC and surrounding areas. Even when the Rangers are good the media attention is nothing compared to what even the Mets and Jets get when they have good teams. Many of the Rangers fans are also corporate gurus who know nothing about the game. The real fans generally cannot afford to go to games, particularly in the playoffs

Sports radio talk show hosts in NYC are guided by the national tv ratings for the NHL in terms of whether hockey is a topic worth dedicating time to.

Not much new to anyone here in the Bettman interview:

1- Islanders arena situation.. Coliseum was not viable. Barclays was not made for hockey. Ownership looking at options. Maybe a new arena. NOT moving out of market.

2- Nothing on Quebec or Arizona, really. Acknowledgement that Arizona is looking for a new and better located arena.

3- Nothing on Calgary and a new arena.

4- Olympics: Sounds as if that is dead horse. The usual points: puts a break in the season at a point where there is no competition from football or baseball; no rights to use images or video; Bettman has offered for hockey to be summer, but IOC says 'no way'...

5- Looking to grow the game in China. New league there? New rinks, etc.

6- Vegas: Not worried about hockey players and the nightlife accessible there. Not worried about betting because anyone can bet right now if they want to.

We've heard it all before.

I think it's meant more to mean that being in Vegas doesn't improve accessibility to gambling. It's already easy enough to do online, if nothing else.

I caught part of this interview.... Francesa annually has Bettman on at this time of the year.. and Bettman always says the same thing... which is absolutely nothing.

Francesa is not a Hockey guy at all... he freely admits it...

There is very very little Hockey in the NY media... as to the NY Sports Talk radio.. on WFAN the only real Hockey guy is longtime Cincinnati Bengals QB Boomer Esiason (a Long Island native and huge NY Rangers fan) If you listen from 6-10 am you'll hear him and get a bit of Hockey talk... especially now in Playoff season.

The late morning guys are not Hockey guys... the teams they follow Mets/Jets/Knicks/Nets

The only time Francesa talks Hockey is Playoff time... and he does get some big names to talk Hockey through the Playoffs.

WFAN broadcasts the Devils and some Islander games

and over at the NY ESPN affiliate station... Hockey talk is non existent unless you tune in for the Rangers games.

definetly not true, NASCAR is a non-factor in the New York market, NHL is definetly behind the NBA, NFL and MLB, but it is definetly cared about and talked about and written about.

Fwiw, I visited NYC five years ago when the Lens were playing the Rangers in the playoffs and I couldn't find the game on TV anywhere.

And the funny thing about ESPN NY is they have 2 hockey guys as hosts on different shows, Rangers backup PBP man Don LaGrecca and Rick DiPietro.

********. People who can't afford tickets aren't more of a fan than people who can. Yes, there are plenty of tickets owned by businesses, but there are thousands owned by "real fans."

Can't listen to NYC sports talk radio anymore, right now it's all about the irrelevant Knicks and as much as I like baseball it's a bit tedious to be breaking down games and panicking in mid-April

Don't listen to ESPN Ny but LaGreca has a daily hockey podcast and they also have a Rangers playoff focused one with him and ironically DiPietro
