Sportsnet/Rogers Use of Regional Feeds in the SC Playoffs: Why?

What is the rationale behind Rogers/Sportsnet's continued use of regional broadcasts in the first round of the playoffs, instead of simulcasting NBC's coverage?

Since Wednesday, in all four situations where Sportsnet had the choice of a regional feed or the NBC produced feed, Sportsnet used the regional feed (and in all four cases, the road team's feed)

(For context: in last year's first round, an identical approach was taken. In 2015, Rogers simulcasted NBC's coverage, in series they did not produce.)

Simple. NBC Sports charges a much hire rate to Sportsnet to use any of their feeds including the Comcast SportsNets than the local FSN affiliates.

Cost has nothing to do with it.

There is no way Sportsnet will take a NBC feed with Cuthbert so that will be a local feed. But Sunday afternoon Sportsnet has no choice but to take the NBC feed even with McGuire who still has close TSN ties. Any game on NBC there is no local RSN coverage.

Here is my gut feeling - Sportsnet knows their play by play roster is weak and they don't want to remind Canadians of that so they would rather show a local US RSN than an NBC crew.

But on Friday night the only TV coverage of Pittsburgh/Columbus were the 2 local US feeds.

In the US right now fans watching the Edmonton/San Jose game on NBCSN have no idea that the announcers they are hearing are in a studio in Connecticut.

Incorrect. The announcers are in Edm and have been tweeting pics from Edm

Sorry but in this case you are wrong. As someone who has worked nearly 20 years for the league or a rights holder that cost to "plug in" to a game has a ton to do with it.

Under the terms of the current national contract - Rogers has the right to import ANY NHL feed of their choosing for distribution in Canada. NBC has the same right in the US.

The RSN's do not control rights outside of their assigned territories, the NHL owns those rights.

Rogers likes using a FOX RSN because the graphics are cleaner. The ticker and FOX logo are not coming from the truck but the rest of the graphics are. Most importantly the scorebox is clean of another network's logo.

ROOT Sports is the same way

I know in the case of NESN that both Rogers and TVA carry many Bruins games during the regular season and NESN does not see a dime from that.

Bottom line is Rogers prefers a feed that is less cluttered with graphics and logos that are of no interest to Canadians anyways.

I dunno, I'd rather be getting Joe B and Laughlin for Caps games then Hughson and Simpson, even though I love the latter a ton ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I'm just going to assume that if your typical Sportsnet/CBC viewer got to listen to Gord Miller or John Forslund call a game it would make the regular Sportsnet crew look horrible in comparison.

NBC used the HNIC broadcast for the Ducks/Flames last night which I thought was weird. Anyone know why there wasn't an NBC broadcast ?

Nothing vs. you or anyone else but I don't get the flak Romanuk gets. I actually like the guy. I can understand it with Cole, guy needs to retire but why Romanuk gets flak I really don't know.

$$$

Because of cost reasons they typically only use 4 full production teams in the playoffs and rely on Canadian or local feeds for the rest. This year they are doing national telecast and sharing production with the teams that have an csn/NBC ran. That leaves one series to pick up Sportsnet feed from.

Sunday on NBC Networks

6 p.m. Game 3 – (2) Pittsburgh at (3) Columbus CNBC
Chris Cuthbert, Brian Boucher

7 p.m. Game 3 – (1) Montreal at (WC1) N.Y. Rangers NBCSN
Gord Miller, Ray Ferraro
10 p.m. Game 3 – (2) Edmonton at (3) San Jose NBCSN
Brendan Burke, Mike Johnson

Pretty safe bet Cuthbet will not be on Sportsnet air.

Yup another local feed

Honestly its just terrible, and the worst part of the Rogers contract. Having to listen to St Louis/Nashville local announcers makes no sense.

Just saw a Price interview with Ray Ferraro on Sportsnet Central. I thought Rogers would do everything to avoid the TSN guys, pretty funny to watch.

Cole has the pipes.

Romanuk is just bad. He gets names wrong he gets numbers wrong he is way behind the play.

He's called James van Reimsdyk John and Jack on multiple occasions. He's just bad.

TSN also only had 4 series not 8 in the first round.
