For peeps who are more knowledgeable with the AHL than I am, how competitive are we expecting SA to be this year? With Kerfoot/Toninato/Meloche and all the other additions seems like they've had quite a positive turnover.

Probably 5th/6th in the Pacific. A great year would be 3rd/4th. There are some decent players, but there is also a lot of youth and the AHL transition is tough for a lot.

Given their history I'd still keep expectations low. We thought the talent level was pretty high last year going into the year too. We don't know how the wrinkle of adding Blues players will impact them. There's usually a ton of injuries and they didn't sign many AHL vets to fill holes, it's going to be younger AHL/ECHL types. This could all add up to a better team but there's a lot of unknown too. I think they can be a competitive .500 team and hope for more. What happens up top with the Avs affect them too.

Btw, it wasn't mentioned the Eagles signed Joey Ratelle. I'm intruiged by that as he was a big time Q scorer. Eagles are getting younger faster too.

Eagles are certainly bringing in some good additions making up for a couple of big losses. I'm still wondering why the Joly signing wasn't announced yet. Had a chance to when they announced the Atkinson/Brittain contracts.

It's the Avs, they never announce all their AHL signings.

Do the Eagles have enough players to field a roster without receiving a large amount of players from the San Antonio or does it look like they are making room for when the Blues send a bunch of players to San Antonio?

Compared to past years, the Eagles are really low on signing announcements. Only 8 guys announced right now (4F, 3D, 1G). They also let go their captain from last year along with another fan favorite. My feeling is that they are making room. I wouldn't be surprised to see 6-10 players assigned from the big clubs, if there is that many to send down.

As of now, not even close. Eagles have 4 signed fwds (2 more received QO's, but haven't signed) and 3 D (with one more unsigned QO).

With them receiving a projected 2 fwds and 1 D from Rampage camp (as of today), they're going to need 4-5 more players.
Frazee
Marchment
Atkinson

If the "Blues Plan" is still a thing, those 4-5 players could absolutely come from SA camp.
St Amant
Joly
Shaw
Belzile
Graham

plus...a goalie

Thanks for the player list, that would be something to get excited about!

If (when) Frazee gets sent down he will have to report to Atlanta's ECHL team: http://www.echl.com/gladiators-agree-terms-frazee

Interesting. I figured he was Colorado bound with all the other forwards signed and him barely even getting a sniff at the AHL.

How many forwards does SA plan on starting with? We have 31 signed already, including AHL contracts. 13 (Avs) + the 2 you are projecting being sent down to the Eagles still leaves 16 forwards for SA. I've never paid attention before. Is it normal to have that many scratches?

Why did these top guys leave? They just won a championship and it appears they are not really moving up, league-wise.

The Eagles decided not to bring them back. One player was 36 and the other 30, so I assume it was an age thing. The Eagles also didn't re-sign their leading scorer from last year. My guess is that they want to load up with as many assigned guys as they can get for several reasons, one of them being to try and help the fan base adjust to the inevitable change if they do go AHL next year.

Yes it's normal to have a lot of extra players in the AHL on paper. There's constant injuries and that excess dries up fast.

Really glad to see Register signed. Eliteprospects was showing that he signed in another league.

That blueline should be really good:
Register: Dman of the year, Playoff MVP
Bowman: Former all star
Marto: 2nd team all star
Atkinson: 50 points last year

He actually did sign with a team in Europe. During the second round of the playoffs last year. But he backed out of it somehow.

That is a really dangerous blue line. Almost not enough points to go around!

I didn't know Bowman was still playing hockey. I felt he got kinda a raw deal years ago and was still a competent 4th liner. Looks like he dropped off hard after leaving NA.

Admission: Colin Wilson is a bit of a dreamboat, and I'm certainly not that way inclined

So will the AHL team be realistically any good this year?

They have the talent, especially if Kerfoot ends up down there (C is kind of weak at the top) and STL sends some highly talented players.
