Esche will be resting, he's not playing at all

Disappointed Esche named Team USA third goalie, mulled skipping Olympics

By ED MORANDaily News Sports WriterTURIN, Italy - Flyers goalie Robert Esche is on his way to the Olympics this afternoon, but he will not be playing.

“Laviolette called me and told me I wasn’t going to be playing. He said he was naming John Grahame the starter. I was upset and thought about not coming, but I talked with [Flyers and Team USA assistant general manager Paul Holmgren] and he told me not to worry about it.”

Philly.com

Crappy move by Lavy. The US is going to get lit up with Grahame in nets, I'm sorry.

maybe Laviolette is afraid of those big rebounds that Esche allows. It really does not matter, everyone knows Team USAA's archillies heal is in goal. if we medal i will be thrilled.

I'm not surprised at Esche's response. The guy has absolutely no class. He should just go over there, support the team, hope he can get in but if not, practice hard and be there for the guys. He's been complaining about the goalie selection from the beginning. As a Canadian, I was really hoping he'd be named starter with guys like Iginla sitting on his doorstep when he gives up those big rebounds.

well said. Esche hasn't done anything to impress anyone here, why should he go to the Olympics?

Actually, the terrible move by Team USA was picking Esche over Ryan Miller.

Esche's comments are pretty classless. It's an honor just to be selected to the team.

They were probably hinting that they wanted him to stay at home. He obviously needs to get a clue

So the guy that "doesn't belong in the NHL" gets the nod over Esche.

Actually...Esche deserves to be there (So does Miller for that matter), but Dipietro doesn't even belong in the same company let alone a spot over Esche.

Not true. DiPietro has played better than Esche this year, especially lately.

Latley..Is this the same Dipietro giving up what 5 goals a game over the last 6 weeks or so....Esche was solid in the world cup and personally his ladst few starts he has looked pretty good.

But it's apples and oranges because the best goalie won't even be there...

How is it classless to be upset with this decision? Because quite frankly, this decision is horse-****. Esche was arguably the only reason the USA did ANYTHING at the World Cup and is a more proven goaltender than the career back-up Grahame and the over-hyped DiPietro. I think he has every right to be pissed off. It hasn't been his best year, but the team's defense and PK has sucked most of the year, I think his numbers are pretty good considering how the team plays in front of him most of the time.

I realize that USA Hockey doesn't work the same way as Hockey Canada (what have you done for me in the past is just as important as lately) but I think this is a stupid decision. I'm right there with him when it comes to bitterness.

It's classless to come out and say it in public. Some things are better left to themselves and this is one of them. If he left it at "I'm disappointed that I wasn't selected to be the starter" it would have been fine. However, saying that he thought about staying home was classless and sounded like something a grade school kid would say.

The World Cup was 2 years ago. What does that have to do with the Olympics now? IMO, the past is completely irrelevant and the best players should be on the ice.

Grahame has played better than Esche as of late and has earned the job. If you want to argue that Esche should back up instead of DiPietro, I won't argue with you. However, this isn't the first time Esche has opened his mouth when he shouldn't have and probably won't be the last.

I guess I don't find someone speaking their mind and their feelings classless. I guess you prefer Crosby interviews over Roenick interviews? I hate the politically correct, boring, prepared statements that athletes always give. I'm glad I know he's pissed off. Nothing wrong with a little passion.

Ryan Miller was hurt when they named the team, team USA has been praying that one of them gets hurt so they can name Miller to the team.

Fact of the matter is that all 3 of them are playing like *** this is a no-win situation. With all the penalties that are going to be called, you have to go with your hottest hand and it's probably the goalie whose playing on one of the hotter teams in the league.

No worries. Jim McCrossin will fly to Torino and pull Esche's groin. And Forsberg's.

Esche hasnt been amazing but i still think USA has the best shot at winning anything when he is in net. In my opinion dipietro and graham are both pretty horrible, and esche has been great in past international hockey. He was also great last year for us, and i think this year he has been respectable in net granted his injuries and inconsistant playing time.

just my opinion

Does this mean Miller can now be on the team? If so I bet he gets a start or 3. He's better than Graham, although Graham's been on a hot streak lately.

I can see Graham looking real bad getting pulled for Dipietro and he looking bad, and then Esche getting the start after that. Grahm has done well because Tampa has started to play better and Dipietro is all hype. I was really hoping to have Esche and Nitty start to see which plays better. One thing is for sure with Esche pissed and having something to prove + a healthy team with a trade we will be flat out rolling into the post season

Thats shocking that Grahame got the start and i hope miller gets a chance. he has given the sabres a ton of confidence. its strange to think he can't be on the team.

Esche's comments won't be received well, and I can see him sitting in the press box no matter what.
