Best third line in the league??

Jacque has assembled a line of Schaefer-Spezza-Havlat for a potential third line and I would be the first to say if that line sticks it would be the sickest third line in the league...

Which team would rival that or in your opinion the best third line currently?

I'd take Pandolfo/Madden/Gionta ahead of that one, personally, though it the Ottawa one is pretty good.

Also, the Stars' third line, even without Lehtinen, ranks up there as one of the best. They have Jason Arnott on there, now.

The Canucks' third line is also amongst the best in the league - Arvedson/Linden/Cooke.

Isles too have a good one, Weimer/Scatchard/Asham

When the Stars get Lehtinen back, I think it'll be them & the Devils having a two-horse race for 'best 3rd line in the league' with teams like Ottawa, Vancouver, New York Isles, and a few others the third best and back.

It depends what you prefer. A real stopper line with some offense or a great offensive line, like your example, which is most of the time in the offensive zone of the other team.

Haven't seen enough of the other teams to make a fair comparison, but the B's line of Axelsson - Rolston - Bergeron has been great.

Dallas' third line of Morrow-Arnott-Barnes has been spectacular. They go out and dominate games, make players like Thornton invisible.

Although its kinda hard to call that line a 3rd line, but they match up with the 1st line every night.

i really like the canucks' 3rd line with its mixture of experience and youthful vitality. its got everything ranging from leadership to defense to intensity. cooke - linden - arvedsson is the best 3rd line the canucks' have had in a long long time. our 4th line of Ruutu/Lindgren/Keane - Chubarov - May is a 4th line too

It was my understanding that the 3rd line was Turgeon-Kapanen-Young. That ain't a bad one either.

the Stars 3rd line should be the Finnish line:

Antti Miettinen - Niko Kapanen - Jere Lehtinen

The Stars had the best 3rd line last season by a pretty decent margain, leading the league in goals, points and +/-.

Brenden Morrow - Niko Kapanen - Jere Lehtinen.

Though we've struggled with our recent combinations, untill it's settled, the Stars have nothing yet.

Right now the Canucks have the best 3rd line in terms of having your 3rd line perform the way you want and expect it to.

The only problem with that is the question of Spezza's ability defensively. If a third line is supposed to be a checking line to shut down the opposition's top line while being a threat offensively, I'd think Spezza still has stuff to learn in that department but maybe he's a quick learner and will kick butt.

Spezza and Havlat on the same line is a dangerous, especially when most teams use their 3rd line to shut down other teams defensively. Poor Schaefer could be doing a lot of running around trying to cover for Havlat and Spezza.

I've been tremendously impressed with that line this year. But with this trio leading their team in time on ice, can you call them the third line?

Cough cough and physically.

Since we are throwing homer votes in here(not to you at all VD), I would like to mention the Avery, Belanger, Lappy line from LA. That line has done a great job cycling down low, keeping the play alive and well you know what a third line usually does.

OK, so this is a homer pick, but the Flyers third line this year is Kapanen-Primeau-Brashear. Very difficult line to play against, and will probably score between 50 and 60 goals between the three of them. OK, Brash isn't exactly Peter Forsberg, but anyone who watches him play has to admit that he is more than just a fighter now.

My non homer pick would have to be the Stars. Ottawa wins on pure talent, but they really have two second lines. I dont see this line shutting anyone down, though they will probably score more than any other third line.

If you are basing your pick on Talent or scoring, I think the Ottawa line will win. If you want the defensive shut down types, then Ottawa don't win. But I would hardly call selecting the Ottawa third line as "the best" is a homer pick, it is a very legitimate option, depending on what you value more.

Of the ones mentioned here, I'd rank them:

1. Dallas (either of the first two combos would top the others noted below IMO)
2. Ottawa
3a. Vancouver
3b. Boston

We, B's fans, want to say personal thank you to Sean Avery for waking up our team!

Seriously I like Belanger and Lappy...they should have somebody more decent than Avery.

If leafs lines are like this?

Antropov Sundin Mogilny
Roberts Nieuwendyk Renberg
Tucker Reichel Nolan

course worst combo would be
Tucker Reichel Renberg

which isn't half bad, not the best though

No love for the Grind Line? I'd rank them...

1) New Jersey
2) Detroit
3) Ottawa
4) New York Islanders
5) Vancouver Canucks
6) Tampa Bay Lightning (Alexeev-Svitov-Fedotenko is a GOOD line, dammit!)

No Dallas because I have no clue what the current third line is.

Don't get me wrong, i didn't toss a vote to Ottawa's third line (though i think it's near the top).
Havlat can hold is own defensively, as can Schaefer and Spezza can't. Physically, not a strong line. Offensively, very strong.

This is not your run of the mill 'shutdown' 3rd line, but Ottawa doesn't use it for that purpose.
Most seem to think that's unconventional, which is fine, but it definitely does the job.

No Dallas because I have no clue what the current third line is.
When healthy, bank on it that the Finnish line will return..

Though Lehts just got placed on the IR and could be out a few weeks, so no Finnish line for a while.
