Speaking of Lebron, we might be headed to a ''The decision part III'' very soon. Honestly, I wouldn't be that surprised if he ends up with the Clippers.

Lmao, wouldn't that be something...

I just heard an interesting tidbit on sports radio that stated if the GSW were to keep their core (KD, SC, DG, KT) together for the next 4 years it'd cost them 1.4B when factoring both player salaries and luxury tax.

Now, you add in LBJ and we can probably push this number closer to 2B.

Also, would LBJ play C on this Warriors team?

Curry is due for a big increase this summer. KD is expected to remain on the team. Unless LeBron is willing to play at a significant discount they won't have cap space.

NBA doesn't have a hard cap. Teams can go over it if they so please (but it'll cost them $$$).

I understand they hyped it up but seriously, we are talking about the greatest boxer of all time versus a guy who lost an MMA fight to Nate Diaz once. He's not even a boxer.

Yeah there is still a luxury tax limit but the whole salary cap in NBA is complex.

Quote:
Kevin Durant: After changing the basketball landscape last summer, Durant faces another big decision this time around. Due to the Collective Bargaining Agreement, he can either sign for his full maximum salary ($35.35 million at the current salary cap estimate) or take about $3.5 million less to fit under the non-Bird exception, which would allow the Warriors to stay over the cap and retain their own free agents using Bird rights. Reporting has indicated Durant is willing to make that sacrifice, which would presumably be a one-season pay cut to play with superior teammates.

Andre Iguodala and Shaun Livingston: These two are the players most affected by Durant’s decision because Golden State will have full Bird rights should they not have to renounce the duo to get under the salary cap. If Durant takes less, the challenge will be balancing out a desire to pay two reliable, aging contributors with some serious financial ramifications. Paying their four All-Stars handsomely means every dollar to supporting players ratchets up an eventually massive luxury tax bill.

Stephen Curry: At this point, it appears to be assured that the two-time MVP will be the first player to agree to the new CBA’s Designated Veteran contract, allowing him to get more than 30% (likely 35%) of the salary cap despite only having eight seasons of NBA experience. At the current $101 million salary cap estimate, Curry’s contract will be worth up to $205 million over five seasons.

Likely Summer of 2017 Cap Space: None

Realistic Maximum Summer of 2017 Cap Space (using $101M estimate): $38.7 million

Thanks for the details.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but, essentially, isn't a NBA team allowed to commit as much salary as it wants if it wants to bear massive luxury tax burden? Or is there something preventing this theoretical team from, say, carrying a total of 500M in yearly player salaries in the CBA?

I thought there was one but after reading Wiki's entry sounds like there is none in favor of an incremental tax:

Quote:
The 2011 CBA instituted major changes to the luxury tax regime. The previous CBA had a dollar-for-dollar tax provision system, which remained in effect through the 2012–13 season. Teams exceeding the tax level were punished by being forced to pay one dollar to the league for each dollar by which their payroll exceeded the tax level. Starting in 2013–14, the tax changed to an incremental system. Under the current system, tax is assessed at different levels based on the amount that a team is over the luxury tax threshold.[69] The scheme is not cumulative—each level of tax applies only to amounts over that level's threshold. For example, a team that is $8 million over the tax threshold will pay $1.50 for each of its first $5 million over the tax threshold, and $1.75 per dollar for the remaining $3 million. Starting in 2014–15, "repeat offenders", subject to additional penalties, are defined as teams that paid tax in previous seasons. In the first season, repeat offenders from in all previous three seasons will pay a stiffer tax rate; from 2015–16 thereafter, teams paying taxes in three out of four years will be subject to the higher repeater rate.[13] As in the previous CBA, the tax revenue is divided among teams with lower payrolls.[70] However, under the new scheme, no more than 50% of the total tax revenue can go exclusively to teams that did not go over the cap.[6] Initial reports did not specify the use of the remaining 50% under the 2011 CBA,[6] but it was later confirmed that this amount would be used to fund revenue sharing for the season during which tax was paid.[71]

For the 2013–14 season, the luxury tax threshold was set at $71.748 million. The Brooklyn Nets, whose payroll for that season was projected to be over $100 million, would face a luxury tax bill above $80 million, resulting in a total payroll cost of $186 million.[72]

Tax levels from 2013–14[edit]
Amount over tax threshold Standard tax per excess dollar Repeat offender tax per excess dollar
$4,999,999 or less $1.50 $2.50
$5 million to $9,999,999 $1.75 $2.75
$10 million to $14,999,999 $2.50 $3.50
$15 million to $19,999,999 $3.25 $4.25
Over $20 million $3.75 + $0.50 per $5 million $4.75 + $0.50 per $5 million

Me? Won't buy the fight on ppv but will certainly watch it at the local pub. Too bad its going to be a boxing match, McGregor would destroy crybaby mayweather with mma rules. I know this is all about the money but still the entertainment value is high.

I'll definitely be heading out to watch McGregor vs. Mayweather. I know it's a boxing match and whatnot, but I'm not sleeping on McGregor's left.

Of course, I'm a huge McGregor fan boy, so I'm probably setting myself up for disappointment anyways lol.

Surprised no one has mentioned Derek Carr signing a 5 year 125 million dollar deal. 70 million of it is guaranteed. That is insane.

He's a bit like Joe Flacco to me in that he's the football equivalent of a decent , generic pair of blue jeans : He won't elevate a team by himself but put him on a really good team and he'll pull his weight better than most. They're both paid WAY too much for the actual difference they make but it's a QB centric league, that's just how it is.

Lions - All Blacks at 3:30 am Eastern Saturday (tonight).

I think the Lions are one of the greatest traditions in sport.

From the 1997 documentary "Living With Lions", available in full on YT. A great speech by Jim Telfer.

Flacco got his insane contract after winning a SuperBowl though, did he not? Carr hasn't accomplished anything.
