There's so much talk about officiating in the NHL during the Stanley Cup playoffs(as there is annually), we often get threads maligning the likes of Tim Peel, Chris Lee, and Chris Rooney, usually for good reason. I know that I absolutely hate seeing either of these three calling a game involving my team, and there's no doubt that Peel has been horrendous in these playoffs. The Riley Nash/Bobby Ryan incident in OT, obviously being the tip of the iceberg that has brought attention to his officiating.

My question is, what referee do you LIKE? I know who the consensus worst in the league are, but I have zero idea on who the best are. I know personally, that I used to love Stephen Walkom calling games.

Interested in hearing people's thoughts.

No one pays attention when the ref is doing a good job. The only refs that get any attention are the Tim Peels of the league

They all try too hard to manage the game instead of just calling it the same both ways IMO

Tim Peel is the worst, no preference for the best.

Not sure, I've never heard of him. Haven't heard his name yet. I'm sure he's out there somewhere.

Referee's of both the Oilers and Flames series have been atrocious. Very one sided officiating, yes some undisciplined from both teams, but when either San Jose or Anaheim do similar its going uncalled.

This all day.

I think a lot of the problem is that the officials are so unfamiliar. Back when we had Kerry Fraser, Bill McCreary, Terry Gregson, Andy Van Hellemond and even Dave Jackson.

Too many names that you don't know, younger guys with less than 5 yrs experience, and I really think the 2 ref system hurts. Nothing pisses people off more when the ref from 75 feet away, calls something that happens right in front of the second ref.

I think another reason is the helmets and half shields they wear. Makes them seem less human, cant put a name and face (or hair) together.

Start putting their names on their backs again.

Yea I like Wes McCauley too, I can't think of a blatant time I said "****in McCauley" and his emphatic calls bring joy to my heart.

Over the years McCauley, O'Halloran, Devorski and Fraiser. They've had their share of BAD moments but you know what? No one is perfect but these are the guys I've grown to trust the most.

Tim Peel can just tick off

I am confident that Tim Peel can screw up any call.

Awards:
McCauley, O'Halloran, and Devorski were all guys I liked a lot and thought called a great game. Frasier to a lesser extent, though at times it felt like he made himself more the focal point of the game (and no, I'm not talking about the Gilmour incident).

I actually like Romasko a lot among some of the newer refs, I'm probably one of the only ones in that regard.

McCauley is one I trust. He usually doesn't make real bad calls. But when he makes a call it's possible to be pretty funny

Wes has a few mic'd up videos on Youtube

Wes McCauley and Dan O'Hallaran.

I used to be okay with Eric Furlatt but it looks like Tim Peel has poisoned him.

I tried refereeing many years ago. Gave me a different perspective and a lot of appreciation for the difficulty of the job. It is a rare occasion that I concern myself with the officiating of NHL games. Things generally even out in the end.
