What are the Flames missing? Please read the OP first*

There is a good chance that the Flames will not get past the Ducks, going forward in your opinion, what are the Flames missing? What do they need to take that next step? Seeing the Flames in the regular season this year and the playoffs this year, what did you like and what did you not like? They got lot's of dead weight coming off, so that will help.

Everyone please don't turn this into a Flames vs Oilers or any other team, if you want to talk about the Oilers or any other team, please open up a new thread. Thank You.*I will put please read the OP, so please read this message.

Consistent goaltending first of all. Elliott has either looked like a world-beater or he's looked terrible, with little in-between. Another huge need is a top-line RW. There were a lot of Flames fans acting like Ferland was the next big thing when he got hot for like 10 games, but he is ideally in the bottom 6.

Monahan, Tkachuk, and Bennett need to all get better. (Time)

Hamilton and Gaudreau need to get their mental games right. (Time/experience and coaching?)

Need to upgrade the 3rd line (Jankowsk/Shinkaruk/Mangiapane/Lazar...Time)

Need to upgrade the 3rd pairing (Andersson/Kulak/Hickey/Engellend(1 million)... Time)

Need to upgrade goaltending (Gilles or a UFA)

To sum up, they need time and a new goaltender.

Goaltending. When Elliot played great, the Flames looked unbeatable. When he hasn't like early in the season and the playoffs, the Flames have looked absolutely horrible. There is a psychological factor to goaltending that I think many people here overlook. If your team has a goalie that gives up soft or bad goals or goals at the wrong time it deflates the entire time, and it doesn't matter how many goals the team can score because the other team can score seemingly whenever they choose.

They don’t have a #1 C of the quality real cup contenders typically have. Goaltending isn’t quite there either.

This is very true, when Kiprusoff played for the Flames, he would hold the fort and not let in many goals, ever since he retired, it has not been the same.

This is ********, not every team in the leauge is going to have a elite #1 center because there are not many of those. Sean Monahan(is a good center, just look at his numbers), Backlund(is a very good 2nd center), Sam Bennett(when he is on he is good but needs time), that is good center depth. The goal tending will need upgrading.

They don't grow on trees and frankly unless Bennett get's there it's unlikely to ever happen.

Can't rely on that. Our best bet is to hope Backlund can contain the top center of the other team and Monahan and Bennett outscore their mismatches.

And I guess hope Malkin gets old, 2 elite centers are a tough match up

When is the last time a team won the Cup with a 1A/1B guy as their #1 C?

Our core needs to develop mentally as well as physically.

It seems like a lot of our roster deficiencies were masked under Hartley despite our poor play due to the will to win he instilled in the players. Under Gully, we play infinitely better hockey but never seem to play confidently enough.

I think we need the chopping and changing of players to stop after this off-season too and give the entire team, not just the core, some constancy

I know what you lomiller1 but getting a elite number 1 center is impossible, unless you tank a season, I don't know who the players are in the next draft.

Chill.

And yes, not every team can have an elite 1C. Also, not every team can win the Cup.
Who's the last Cup winner without an elite or at least top 10 C?

Anaheim?

Bennett is an appealing option for the Leafs, could fill Bozak's soon to be void at C.

Finding a goaltender(s) that can stop a beachball for starters.

Secondly, Calgary needs to stop playing dirty. I get that Tkachuk and Bennett are trying to be pests, but there's ways to be one without physically injuring people.

His name is Nylander.

Don't need Bennett to play 4C

Sure, but options are nice and the top 6 could use some grit.

A brain and some maturity. This dirty crap that Thachuk started with this club is costing them games and distracting the entire team from actually playing hockey. Time to cut that stuff out and focus on the game.

Calgary has been missing a player like Tkachuk for years. Others teams hate him, but Flames fans love the kid. He has heart, ambition, and drive. Yes he's taken some penalties, but he's a rookie. This kid is gonna be one of the best pests ever. And I love it.
