In that first article, the writer guesses that Detroit will protect Mike Green, Danny DeKeyser, and Nick Jensen in the expansion draft, leaving XO exposed.

While I'm not at all ready to ship DDK out of town, I'd be very frustrated if they used his spot instead of XO.

Hopefully, they'd take a Helm or a Gator, and the Wings keep all their defensemen, but it wouldn't exactly be the end of the world if Danny's $5M AAV went to the casinos and stayed there.

Hopefully Detroit hoards all the cheap contracts they can, and Vegas is forced to help out our cap situation.

Yeah, that would be my hope, too. My only gripe would be if we didn't deal Dekeyser beforehand. Even if we just got a pick out of it I'd take that over losing him for nothing.

I really hope the Wings can shed 3 bad contracts. That would be a good start to the rebuild.

The surprise there would be Jensen. Dekeyser and Green are no-brainers. Even with a bad season DDK is going to have trade value now and going forward.

While a pick would definitely better than nothing, I guess I'm just toward the optimistic end of the spectrum on DDK, and I hope they don't lose him at all.

Don't get me wrong - I think he had a lousy year. But for the potential value if he turns it around, versus (what I think is) the potential of other players with bad deals, I'd sooner lose any of 2-3 other contracts.

The contracts aren't ideal, but the available cap space that would come from moving three bad contracts has no value unless we can actually put it to better use. Call me skeptical of that proposition.

Yup regardless of how poor his year was DDK is still a formidable top 4 D and our second best current defenseman.

Correct. I think the chicken and the egg scenario is:
* Finally having some meaningful cap space
* Finally trusting the person in charge of utilizing it to rebuild the roster

It's at least POSSIBLE that Holland turns over a new leaf, and uses cap space to make moves to help the long-term. Color me skeptical, but it's not out of the realm of the imagination.

I think the only value it probably has is in facilitating trades and the ability to take back some bad contracts to get those done. I think anyone good that is signed in free agency is almost guaranteed to be overpaid and signed for too long (sound familiar?).

If Holland had a better track record executing trades, I might be more optimistic. Sadly, his record in that department speaks for itself.

Oh, I definitely wasn't expecting cap space to be for any impact free agents. I want the rebuild, so I want as many cheap young players and draft picks as I can get.

If Detroit suddenly had $10M to burn, I'd scour the league for any team with a bad contract, where I could leverage the best deal of getting extra picks, or even a project defenseman I liked. But definitely not any expensive UFAs.

I don't disagree, but if we're exposing DK, I'd trade him for the best of whatever we could get rather than risk losing him for nothing. And despite his rough looking contract I think Vegas would probably jump at selecting him - especially considering what else we could end up leaving unprotected.

I'd want Holland to acquire other teams bad contracts along with picks/prospects. But Holland would most likely sign another Frans

For most of his tenure, Holland has been dealing from a position of strength, his club was winning and always in playoff contention. Now this year, it was obvious that the Wings weren't making the playoffs, so he traded Smith, Vanek, Ott and Jurco. He's in a new position.

That leaves me with some optimism that he can right the ship.

IIRC, it's been reported that McPhee will likely take bad salary in the expansion draft from teams that offer up picks/prospects in return for the favor.

It's also been reported that Holland won't want to partake in such an activity.

I mean after that Bickell/Teravainen deal to Carolina, just think of the future treasure Vegas can get to select guys like Brown/Gaborik, Clayton Stoner, Andrew MacDonald, Lehtonen/Niemi, Boedker, Cammalleri, Plekanec, Gorges, Soderberg, Kruger, Grabovski...

Yep. I think many people underestimate how good a start Vegas could get toward building something. Nothing resembling a contender, but they have a unique opportunity to start closer to the middle of the pack than the bottom of the barrel.

Now naturally, their ceiling is only as high as their decisions are shrewd, but embracing all their different options gives them their best shot, and to be honest, I'm kinda rooting for them to put together a decent roster.

Completely disagree on the DDK front. He was so atrocious this year (and last) that I think, accounting for the learning curve, either XO or Jensen could end up as effective as DDK for a fraction of the cost within the calendar year. He wasn't just under-qualified for his position - he was bad for any slot in the top 4. And he makes I-can-produce-offense type of money while being an albatross in that respect.

Personally, I think losing DDK for free + being able to add someone cheaper for a shorter term in FA who is as competent as DeKeyser is a huge win. If we play our cards right, we could have a nice, young core in 2-3 years. No need to have Dekeyser doing nothing positive within that timeframe...at the cost of $5M no less.

Swedish UFA forward Victor Ejdsell, 21, apparently has a shortlist of 3 teams: Nashville, Chicago and Detroit. He's visiting the teams this week.

A 21 year old 6'5'', 215lbs forward and 57 pts in 50 games in the second highest league in Sweden? He'd be worth a contract in my mind.

He's a really interesting player. Nashville or Chicago makes more sense from an opportunity standpoint for him, but maybe the swedish connection can give Detroit an advantage.

Would be a nice addition. Big body, late bloomer, his early career path reminds me of Franzen's.
