Rangers Lose Keefe to Bolts

http://www.tampabaylightning.com/prd...sreleaseID=766

Ok im upset that we lost Keefe, but the bolts claimed him and sent him down to AHL, why couldn't the Rangers do that at the waiver draft, when we claimed him? Or is Sather really clueless and does not know the rules of the NHL?

Great Job Jackass

Sather couldn't send him down...

I believe the team waiving him is the only that could send him down. Sather would've been better off never claiming Keefe because the fans wouldn't have much to complain about.

What was the point of claiming him? Heck why not keep Petro as the extra forward. Sometimes Sather makes me wonder.

Didn't Sather lose Heerema in order to claim Keefe? What was the point? Sather acquires Heerema and then loses him in the waiver draft and picks up Keefe. Then he loses Keefe on waivers to TB.

Is there any plan to this mass confusion?

My guess is maybe Sather is smoking pot when he has those cigars in his mouth. Or maybe he has no clue how to run a hockey team other than the 80s.

Makes you wonder? I used to wonder, to but now I've come to the conclusion that he's a complete buffoon.

The most overrated hockey mind imaginable. Sheldon didn't suit up for New York ONCE.

Um.....they're called "blunts"!

Why would we want Petrovicky, Heerema or Keefe when we've got Siklenka, Rheamue and Hlavac?

Yea I know they are called blunts, Id rather have Petro, Heerema, Keefe rather than Siklenka, Rheamue, Hlavac, and even Carter for that matter.

Oh come on, we got rid of a 22 year old and kept a 30 year-old out of shape retread....It may not work this year but it will pay dividends down the road...Besides,. the bonus of Mike Sucklenka can't be overlooked....

It's the opposite, if he were smoking pot this team would actually improve.

as mentioned it's part of the rules... the Lightning had to either protect or expose Keefe during the draft... if any team picked him up, they'd have to keep him on their roster for 30 days, if they decide to demote him prior to that, he'd have to go through waivers again, with his former team (TBay) having first choice to pick him up again - and they are the only team that could pick him up and send him to the minors without having to clear waivers - since he was exposed in the draft. (happened with Holden last year with Vancouver).

teams do this all the time... the risk that Sather took was that TBay wouldn't have a need for Keefe anymore, since they are fairly deep up front, and have Svitov and Aleexev both in the minors this year too, so Keefe could be a victim of the numbers game - if Tbay didn't pick him up, then he would have likely remained Rangers property, as most other teams would be unlikely to pick him up at the expense of a current roster player (since they couldn't send him down to the minors for 30 days). And the other advantage the Rangers could have here was that if TBay decided not to pick him up, and he was picked up by another team, the Rangers could just claim him back and then send him to the minors if that team decided to demote him prior to those 30 days... (happened with Druken last year when he was with Carolina).

It was a gamble by Sather, and considering the only cost was the $40K waiver fee (which is pennies for the Rangers anyways), what's the big deal?? IMO it's better to take these risks when it has no negative impact on the team, since 40K means nothing to the Rangers, then to not take such risks... worst case you've lost nothing - but there was a chance you'd still have Keefe right now.

The big deal is that this was not the only option.. They could have friggin' played the kid, then see if they cared about losing him or not.. They could have NOT called up an out of shape Rheaume, and let Keefe get a shot to prove if he can handle it, and inject some younger legs into the lineup.. They could have dropped Mike Siklenka, who's role is more than adequetely covered by the likes of Barnaby, Simon, LaCouture and Purinton..

The big deal is that it was yet another completely befuddling move and poor management of the roster by a guy who thinks he knows better than all...

Here's one: They saw Keefe in practice... maybe they just weren't that impressed...

Yea but that what scouts are for, to scout players that might be available, that is what scouts get paid for. If they were not impressed, why claim him.

maybe they claimed him playing the odds.... tbay is deep up front and have players that are worth more to the franchise in the minors... so maybe it'd be a good risk to pick him up off waivers and hope that tbay doesn't claim him back if he's sent to the minors.

if any other team picks him up, then the rangers have the first crack at getting him back if he's sent to the minors.

this guy is likely not NHL ready yet - in tbay he was in the minors last year, and then after exposing him, losing him and getting him back, the first thing they did was send him to the minors.

so why claim him? for the possibility that you could keep him in the system and let him develop for a year in Hartford... the only thing that stands in the way is 1 out of 29 other teams that could possibly take him first, or less likely a team will claim him and keep him on their 23 man roster, instead of a player they already had.

It wouldn't be a huge surprise if a deal is worked out later between the Rangers and TBay, sending Keefe back there for a conditional pick or a low pick... it happens often in the NHL.

Maybe Keefe followed the example of our Captain and didn't go to practice?

So much complaining about a player who was sent to the AHL yesterday.Talk about wasting bandwith.

http://www.sptimes.com/2003/10/25/Li...s_Keefe_.shtml

No wonder why David Frost is pissed.Sheldon Keefe makes only $100,000 playing in the AHL and $700,000 for playing in the NHL.Frost's 3% commission takes a big hit.Keefe has an overall guarantee of $175,000.

Introducing Hershey right winger Sheldon Keefe...

If Sather had called up Wiseman (obtained for Ekman who scored his 2nd goal last night and is averaging 14 minutes a game with the Sharks) and had to expose someone, there would not be so much complaining. Same with Dom Moore. But we're talking about losing Keefe for a 30 year old, out-of-shape Pascal Rheaume.

Tampa picked up Keefe because they COULD send him down. That was their intention when they exposed him in the waiver draft. Doesn't mean they won't recall him some time this year or that he isn't capable of playing in the NHL.

I just wanted to throw a little more fuel on the fire here. This pulled from the Candian Press game recap of STL @ CGY.

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/news_story.asp?ID=58251&hubName=

Quote:
Jeff Heerema was a one-man wrecking crew on Friday night.

.....Heerema notched the game-winning goal 46 seconds into the third period as the Blues won 2-1 over the Calgary Flames.
Sather's truly been sodemized by the wire this season. When you look at the types of players we've lost on waivers, like Heerama or Keefe or Petrovicky, it literally blows my mind to see Hlavac, Rucinsky, Carter and now Rheaume out there on the ice or Siklenka planted in the skybox. Effing-un-*********-believable.

On to Brooks, that article is pure GOLD.

Quote:
"We took [Keefe] in the Waiver Draft in order to get look at him, but after watching him practice I didn't think he was going to fit into what we're trying to do here," Glen Sather said yesterday, apparently unaware that he'd left himself wide open for a punch line.

Quote:
...he (Sather) added that Keefe "[doesn't] shoot the puck well enough . . . I thought he was going to have a cannon for a shot."
Like Hlavac? Or Carter? Or Rucinsky? Or Rheaume? Or Siklenka? Or LaCouture? Or Simon? I mean, gimme an effing break! Other than Lindros, no one on this team can hit the net with any consistency, nevermind get something behind that shot.

This next one from Keefe's agent was my favorite...

Quote:
I can tell you that one player on the team told Sheldon to run as fast as he could away from New York, that he's far better off away from that organization.
$100 says it was Holik!

Again, from keefe's agent....

Quote:
"It's impossible for anyone in hockey to understand why the Rangers do what they do. Maybe there's a reason they haven't been in the playoffs for [six] years."
I can't remember reading anything this scathing about the organization outside of this forum. Brooks is really painting a picture of a man devoid of strategy or plan whatsoever and Sather looks like the biggestg freakin' moron in the game right now. Well done Larry.
