#1 Defenseman

I never really thought of this until now, but who is our #1 defenseman? IMO opinion Tyutin is the closest thing to a #1 DMan on our team.

I'd want Kaspar out there in a pinch.

We have none. We are a defense by committee.

We dont really have one. I'd say Tyutin is the closest because he gets minutes on the power play, the penalty kill and even strength. But the Rosi-Malik pair gets more ice time than Tyutin and Kaspar.

That is one of this team's major glaring holes, and should def. be addressed in the offseason.

Staal is ready to take that role. He has proven himself to be to good for juniors and I feel too good for Hartford. You know what maybe not the #1 defenseman next year but definitely number 2. I see no problem with him stepping up to the challenge.

But to get back on topic, I think its either Tyutin or Poti. Poti has been getting a ton of minutes lately also.

The Rangers don't have one. Most teams don't.

Wooaahh, not so fast. Staal "may" be ready to take on a #2 dman role but in no way should the Rangers give him that role. No need to be giving him 22 minutes of ice time in his rookie season as a 19 year old. Im sure he will get 15-17 minutes.

yes i agree.. you can't just choose out 1 of the 6 Dmen. They work as a unit and thats why we're in third place rite now (of course also thanks to Jags and Henke). But its not just Kasper and Toots, its also Roszival who's tied for 2nd in +/- and Malik, as well as leaders and great sportsmen like Strudwich and yes, Poti (who btw has been playin very well lately)

I'm not saying they don't have one as a slight to the team. Bottom line is there are very few legit #1 defensemen out there. Off the top of my head

1) Redden
2) Chara
3) Blake
4) Pronger
5) Niedermeyer
6) Lidstrom

Phaneuf, Leopold, Ohland, Jovanovski and Pitkanen are close.

Arguably, there are only a handful of "#1" defenseman in the NHL, but I think question being posed is who is #1 on a Ranger's scale, not NHL. I'm biased (see avatar), but our D is solid throughout, really. We have the most consistent defensive crews in the NHL No weak links on it, in my opinion.

I'm not one to be negative and say "GRR! Our defense needs improvement here and here and here and we need to get so and so on our team to make it better!". Lundqvist is definitely helping on defense, but if we had the Panther's defense (as a Panther's fan, I know how inconsistent it is), we wouldn't be where we are.

My point; Our D is doing their job, pretty damn well.

Somehow I don't think Brian is coming back. He's been injury prone all season and I think that is going to hurt Boston's chance to trade him anywhere. Right now the big question to me is who is going to get Witt because I have to think he is going somewhere and I can see both the Flyers and Devils trying to get him although they'll have to find some room with the cap. Big mean strong stay at home D who will play against top lines. If his new team gets good goaltending they might go somewhere.

I'm really surprised, but really pleased our "D" gets so little respect. Let me explain. They are much better than most will give them credit for being. I think a lot of it has to do with the preparation, the coaching and the chemistry. The other thing is that they are a pretty talented bunch and VERY hard working. No big names...just the right mix of everything else.

I think in a few years it will be very different. Even more talent and much higher profiles.

Staal and Tyjtin will mature into extremely solid 1 & 2 Dmen. As Ranger fans we would be lucky to have just one...but we have both. Then there are all the other guys behind these two. I think our "D" could be really, really good for a heck of a long time.
