It's complicated, but basically the North Stars split into Dallas and San Jose, although not evenly. I'm sure some-one will remember the finer details of it.

Interesting tidbit about that. Minnesota got to the point in the expansion draft where they were not interested in any more players they ended up taking Guy Lafleur, although he was retired and had no intention of playing their.
