Discussion: Willie Mitchell

What is his availability heading towards the deadline? I know there was talk of Minnesota looking to unload 3 or 4 of their veteran defenders, including Mitchell. Is he still on the market, or is Minny pushing to re-sign him?

What might the Wild be looking for in return, if he's made available? I'm sure a lot of teams would be interested in him, all this talk about Brandon Witt, but Mitchell's salary is slightly less than Witt's and for my money he's the better defencman.

So I guess it might take an overpayment...

From a Detroit standpoint I'd be willing to offer:

Evan McGrath and a 2nd/3rd rounder for Mitchell

In the Ballpark?

Too bad for the Canuacks they are in the same division as the Wild. You would have to think if he is being unloaded it is going to take a nice offer.

Wild's top priority is to resign Mitchell=start trying to get Kuba cause Mitchell would cost too much for what he is worth

I'm skeptical Mitchell will sign before the deadline (although I am not saying it won't happen). And, if he doesn't sign, I'm willing to bet the Wild deal him.

He is a big physical guy who can play. Exactly the sort of player you want in the playoffs. I'm sure he'll bring an excellent return as a playoff rental.

Yeah, the team declined comment and while I have no doubt they are trying to lock him up, the agent indicated there was still a gap, so I wouldn't say that article indicates there is no chance of him being available...

I think his playoff performance against some pretty darn good offensive talent in 2003 speaks for itself.

The price won't be low. Mitchell could help ANY team in the NHL, and would be highly sought-after at the deadline.

Based on how quiet negotiations usually are around this team, and the tone we hear if things do get out, this sounds pretty good.
Quote:
"We've had some meaningful discussions," said Larry Kelly, Mitchell's agent. "Everything's been on a professional level. We've exchanged offers. We're not miles apart, but there's still some room to move. Discussions are ongoing and have been productive to date."
Does Willie with a 2-3 year deal garner more return than Willie without a deal?

Sort of a moot point. Minn is not going to sign him and trade him.

But, outside that issue, I think an UFA rental can have more market value than a guy with a longterm deal (especially since Mitchell is going to want a 2.5 - 3 million deal to sign before the deadline).

Point of discussion: Willie Mitchell doesn't really look like a "Willie Mitchell."

He doesn't.

Tony Randall looks more like a Willie Mitchell than Willie Mitchell does.

Willie Mitchell looks more like a Jason Anderson.
