Andrei Medvedev

It looks like Spartak is having a great start in the Upper League this season. Is Medvedev finally the starter and if so how is he progressing? Has he lost any weight at all.....it looked like he had dropped a bit at the WJC's last year. Thanks.

He is off to a great start.Medvedev is the starting goaltender for Spartak. He is now 6-0 with a 1.67 GAA.I am not sure how big he was before but he is listed at 186cm....104kg (6'1...230 lbs.) on Spartak's site.

I have spoken to Medvedev two weeks ago. He's really lost some pounds (when i saw him for the first time in this season i can't believe my eyes ) and became more seriuos in training. The coaching stuff now have much more believe in him than ealier. It seems that he is improving step by step. And his perfomances became more consistent this season. But Andrei is not a starting goalie. He shares time along with another keeper Oleg Glebov, they are playing in a turn.
BTW, dont forget that Medvedev is just 20 years old. He is just a very big child.

Wasn't he listed at 220 a year ago?

He is the started for Spartak, but he is sharing ice time with Glebov - they are about half and half - like Manny and Roloson in Minnesota.

I really like his poise - very calm and smart goalie. Handles the puck well outside the crease too.

I don't think so. I guess, that Medvedev needs to play two more seasons in Russia just to become ready for NHL move.

I wonder if Andrei would even be made fun of if Russia didn't spank Canada in the WJC.These hockey youngens sure do like to hold a grudge!

Dustin Byfuglien is a phenom in that respect (270 pounds on a relatively average frame... and it ain't just muscle) and yes, he isn't made fun of as often.

It's hard to say whether it is because of a grudge by Canadian fans or if it is just a case of lack of exposure. I mean, I imagine if Byfuglien was on this kind of platform, *literally picking is freaking nose on the bench* like Medvedev, someone would say something.

So I will say it is part grudge and part exposure.

I am sure he is made fun of by some people in Russia - I mean being out of shape the way he was a year ago is ridiculous, but his weight is rarely brought up.

Later,
Eugene
